Influence is the spice of life, having said that, I beleive that you are honorable in your worries of many of the normalities usually found in so called "childrens" books. Firstly, we must take the stance of a kid. If I was a child, what would be my reason for reading your book, what would i find interesting or what Would grip me so resoundingly that I cannot put it down? children reading at all is rare nowand days, reading for...
"So realistically, every book incoporates a little bit of unreality, especially childrens books that so often embrace it with open arms. to say that these book's influence our children is to speak the truth, but in what way does it influence them?
You can have unrealistic fantasy, with non-real elves, unicorns, magic tricks and the like, presented in a not quite serious manner. Or you can...

Dale, your attitude and situation sounds remarkably like mine several months back. I ended up having a good literary consultant review what I consider my best manuscript, subsequently spent a few weeks giving it a makeover. The improvements definitely made the process worthwhile. Some literary consultants will also help you on your submission materials once they find the material is ready for it.

1. I like to listen to music I enjoy, or at least that I can tolerate. Different types of songs (happy, sad, rock, folk, etc.) can evoke different settings or emotions and that seems invaluable in writing. 2. If you're into sports, turn on the TV or radio and cheer on your favorite team . . . I guarantee that will get you amped, especially if they win. I think excitement, something adventurous as a sporting event, inspires/propels good...

Go for a nice brisk walk. The best is in a light rain, when there won't be many people out and about, and you can freely talk to yourself, talk your way through the problem. I always come back from a walk ready to write. Eric

It's not a "form of copyright"...it's the only copyright. There are a lot of services available on the net that offer "copyrights", but none have any real legal standing. That is, they would not be acceptable in court should you ever have to defend your copyright. The only copyright accepted in a federal court is one issued by the Copyright Office. You will need to go through the US Copyright Office to obtain...

Any ideas on where I can get informal feedback (non-professional) on a completed manuscript, a historical novel of about 85,000 words?

Google searches on your genre can turn up places like this one: http://www.historicalnovelsociety.org/ Or, are you looking for something quite different?

Firstly, you need to get rid of the parents. In real life, as soon as a child has any serious problem, he runs to Mummy and Daddy, and Mummy and Daddy take over and solve it. That doesn't make a good story. However if the children stumble across a portal to another world, Mummy and Daddy might not go through the portal. So if a princess has been kidnapped and is about to be fed to a hungry ...

Depends on the story and the flow of it. If I'm having a bad day of staying on track with it, then if I hit 1,000 words I'm lucky. Lately, on the story I'm doing for the NaNoWriMo thing I see to be doing between 2500 and 3,000 words a day. On the action story I'm very close to finishing it seems to be 1500 to 2000 words. Now, I just have to hope when I get back to work fully on my sequel to ...

Well...you do need an editor if you want someone to tell you how to fix your books because that's exactly what editors do. But to your main questions: Are you fine-tuning who you send your query letters to? That is, are you making sure that the publishers are the ones most likely to be interested in your books? Are you making sure that you emphasize what the market for your ...

For me, I like writing an outline first so I don't wonder off from the story. I know some people who have scenes in their heads will write down that scene and save it for later. I would also suggest maybe writing a character outline if you have a lot of characters that you are dealing with.

Thanks, Elmore. I'm finding this an interesting exercise since I never honestly considered word count before. I usually just write and end up with what I end up with. This will probably end up the same but at least I have something. I think this is my user profile on the NaNoWriMo site: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/533235 User Name: sierrarose

You can post in the services forum to see if anyone is editing cheaply but good editors don't come cheap. Since you're young you could have a teacher proofread for errors and they could also point out any weakpoints. One pointer though? If you are serious about selling? No one is going to buy a 56 page paperback for $19.77 Look through Lulu at similiar sized books and ...
