Winston Smith's job??
Published (2009-12-08 20:42:00)
It's been awhile since I read 1984 but I 'think' the impression a reader is supposed to get is thta Winston's job was mundane and ordinary and not 'important' at all in the great scheme of things. Just a thought. Now read for yourself and see what YOU think.

Winston Smith's job??
Published (2009-12-08 21:01:00)
Winston Smith is a civil servant, but his job is important because he is an editor responsible for the revisionist history which is the Party's official version of the past. Smith is in effect a censor, he rewrites records and alters photos and incinerates original documents.

Just wondering which world events influenced Orwell's perspective and writing and how they did so? There may already be a thread like this. If so you can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Winston believes everything from the past is important as it provides a link to a world without Big Brother, the world he dreams of. Winston wants to find out what life was like before the Party so that he may someday duplicate it.

Winston gets most of his questions answered because he wont have the chance to tell anyone else. He never existed. Also i don't believe the thought police go from house to house. Winston is captured by a thought police, but Mr.Parsons is captured because his daughter caught him saying "Down with Big Brother" in his sleep and turned him in. Hope this helps!
