LXer: Rupert Murdoch vs. The Web
Published (2009-11-25 23:40:00)
Published at LXer: Are the fights that matter just the ones between giant companies? Doesn't the health of the Net and the Web matter more than any commercial battles? These questions came to mind when I read How Murdoch Can Really Hurt Google And Shift The Balance Of Power In Search in TechCrunch recently. In that piece Mike Arrington supported Jason Calacanis' suggestion that Murdoch stick it to Google by cutting an exclusive...

Interesting.. But as mentioned elsewhere on LQ (just to make one small point) this whole "cloud computing" thing doesn't compute for me; it's like webmail, in that when it's down, everything's down. What portion of this Google OS will really be tangibly on your machine, and how much of it will be online somewhere?

This is actually a smart move on Canonical's part. The LPIA repositories never had anywhere near the amount of stuff as the normal Ubuntu repositories and getting normal packages to install on an LPIA machine was painful to say the least. Sure it may have saved 10% of the power, but that was at the expense of two black eyes and a concussion for Ubuntu.

Honestly I hope you're right, but it might just work if it's marketed correctly...let's hope it doesn't come down to that, though. I bet the core language used will be Java too. The writer of the article pretty much hit the nail on the head when she mentioned web browsing being the most CPU intensive use of the computer than any other more complex operations.

Somebody please explain to me the point of a laptop without a screen. If you're tying it to an external LCD or CRT, it ceases to be a portable device, in which case you're better off building a cheap desktop machine. Considering you can build a nicely appointed desktop for a few hundred, I don't see the point of hamstringing yourself with laptop hardware.
