Hi Forum I am wandering...any of you Kde users feel satisfied at the status ( "bug"ology ... :-) ) of Kde 4.x in Slackware current...? I ask this because I have not upgraded yet... so I do not know wether this is worth it or not... Is it "cleaner"...? faster, more reliable, less of a "hog"...? BRGDS Alex

Run pkgtool as root and see if they are installed. "Window Decorations" option should appear under normal conditions. I'm not sure why it isn't in your case.

No, you were supposed to run 'glxinfo' in a terminal. It's a command to run, not a file to open :-) Another serious issue you have is that you have mismatched versions of the compiz packages installed. Exactly what directions did you follow to install compiz? Adam

You do need an initrd if you use the generic kernel (not the huge one). But I don't think it's a problem with the initrd. Are you sure your root partition is on /dev/sda6 ? Look at /etc/fstab or "df -h" to check (and if you see /dev/root it's a symlink, so look at "ls -l /dev/root" output).

I've never really been a KDE user except for 'krusader' (my favorite gnu app). I find that kde4 in --current is 'highly' stable. I've had zero issues with stability so far in my testing on one desktop and one test laptop. The only thing I see missing (from kde3 series) is ability to mouse wheel on desktop and switch desktops, which if I've read the changelog, is in kde4.4 series now. I've been running...

From what I read somewhere, this is a GNOME problem. If you like to get
back to Debian, try another DE and verify.

Well, Slack 13 is using firefox 3.5.5 right now. For slack 12.2, the latest
is 3.0.15. You don't have to do anything. This is the latest version Pat
recommends for that version of slack. Not exactly sure what you mean?

There are at least two ways. It partly depends on how your printer attaches to the system. USB devices should be no problem. On Virtual box, start it up, and click Settings, and then USB. Create a filter for the device. Once XP can see the device, then install the printer in XP as if it were stand alone.
Second method. Run a samba server on linux, and share the printer. On XP install the ...

1. You don't have specific monitor resolutions inside xorg.conf so
2. you should select them from what nvidia-settings wants to provide automatically (you should be able to select resolutions and modes from that utility.
If you can't solve any of both. Try playing with xrandr from terminal (and don't panic if your refresh rate appears lower in xrandr, it is a NVidia bug)

Since the last release came with an unusable version of KDE I upgraded all
my non-server machines from 12.2 to -current as soon as KDE 4.3.3 was
available there.

I think it depends on the application. One fs may be better for db
workloads and others for desktop purposes. I've been running jfs for a
loooonnng time now on my server (has very low I/O load) and my desktop.
Seems to work pretty good.

Some versions of grub will not boot a slackware formatted partition. How
did you format the drive? If you formatted it during the install of
slackware 13, try installing lilo to the root partition of slackware during
the installation and chainload from grub, or try formatting from the distro
that you grub is in first, then select no to format the drive during the
slackware install, since it is ...

Racer, TORCS. But I dislike them both compared to the simulators available for Windows. Live for speed is great and it runs in Wine.
About the arcade games: xmoto and supertux.

I had a look at the debian patch for scilab-5.1.1 and found a patch there that looks like it might fix that -it has something to do with those files anyway, so it's worth a try:
Code:
diff -u scilab-5.0.3.orig/libs/MALLOC/Makefile.am scilab-5.0.3/libs/MALLOC/Makefile.am
--- scilab-5.0.3.orig/libs/MALLOC/Makefile.am 2008-11- 05 18: 42:13.000000000 +0100

Hi,
The old reliable reply; 'It will be released when PV decides Slackware is ready for another release'.
From my point of view there are other things to consider for a release. I'm wondering if there will be a repackaging?

Are you using wep or wpa on your AP??
WEP is a little easier to configure from the console, but WPA can be done with a little elbow grease.
If you're using X11, I'd try installing wicd from the /extra/wicd/ directory on the slack CD/DVD, it's a great little GUI tool for configuring wireless connections. Reboot the computer, startx and see if wicd (appears down by the clock and the battery...
