HOWTO use HDD in ThinkPad Ultrabase
Published (2009-11-25 09:42:00)
Having 2 docking bays and 2 thinkpads allows you to try all combinations. Does the working laptop see drives in both systems? Interesting stuff is often reported by 'dmesg |tail' or 'fdisk -l'

@business_kid, Playing? Well, that is flat out inappropriate. And who is *we*? Pretty sure? Seriously, this is one of my favorites: "Only 'fools' are positive." Come on. You are giving up too easily. The suggestion made is of no help, because the motherboard replacement isn't from the manufacturer. And the machine is way beyond warranty. I am inclined to believe at this juncture that the bios, now downgraded to...

stripping down the kernel

See here (chapter 7): http://www.kroah.com/lkn/ To save time, I start with the generic kernel and leave things as modules that I probably won't need, or turn them off if I know I won't need them. Modules that are needed for accessing the HDD (ahci or sata and filesystem) should be built-in or you will need to use an initrd. Some tips from me: 1) search the output of 'dmesg' for the following: not found no error take action...

Published (2009-11-25 10:41:00)
I've used ntfs-3g for some time without any problems. The project has only started in 2006, as opposed to linux-ntfs which has been around since 2000. Having said that, I should point out that when I started using it, the kernel ntfs driver (which is part of linux-ntfs) was considered unsafe for writing and mounted read-only by default. It appears as though that may have changed in more recent versions. ntfs-3g works in user space using...

bios update related problem
Published (2009-11-23 08:39:00)
Do you have it... You should be able to flash the BIOS with an older version. If you have any reasonable luck, there is a copy out there somewhere waiting for you to google. We are all assuming that the BIOS is the critical variant. Have you tried a few linux live-cds with built-in media support, PCLinuxOS, Mint, to hear if there is any difference?

There is no problem with TRUE hardware raid (no driver required). The problem is that virtually all the motherboard raid and most sub $300(?) raid cards are fake raid(just google it). In the long run you are usually better off using soft raid rather than fake raid. Raid0 does give you a significant speed increase (well below 2X) but when it does fail(not if) there is no redundancy. As long as you understand this and back up anything that is...

Sure, you can even run systems off them, look at the growing NetBook market, they generally run from an SSD. You should have support all ready built into your kernel, too.

I don't know of it being done, but I am sure someone has addressed this issue before you. Some possibilities: 1. Install wine the windows emulator, and try in that. Best if they had an .exe that talked out ti it. 2. **SOLVED** I had forgotten to specify in /etc/conf.d/net to use wpa_supplicant instead of wireless-tools. This doesn't account for wireless-tools flagging the Kill Switch as being on, though this probably isn't the hardware issue I thought it was (If an admin would be kind enough to move this somewhere relevant...). I should probably go fill out a bug report somewhere. /me sighs. (...

Most probably something in the boot, so the kernel mounts it read only and gives you the middle finger until you fix it. fsck the disk and check the logs.

You've been in at the motherboard. Is the flash chip socketed? If so, it can be pulled and flashed by an eprom programmer. You simply buy the appropriate chip, and have them flash the blank. Radio Shack or the like might be able to do that for you. I would comment that I've been a long time in Electronics Hardware and always felt that BIOS were best left alone if at all possible. Any ...

It sounds to me like the video card. At least, whenever I have had a video card go on me, it was usually accompanied by artifacts on the screen (horizontal bars and weird characters). Another possibility is the ram, which is usually a likely culprit when your system is crashing in various, seemingly unrelated places. You can test the ram with most distro's install CDs. Look around in the boot...

OK, I found some info on a site named Linux USB ( http://www.linux-usb.org ) about the "device not accepting address XXX" message I get. Nothing, really. You just named all the common uses for MiniPCIe. Though I can't imagine why you wouldn't put an SSD in there. Put the OS on the SSD and use the HDD for general storage. System performance will be better, and you can spin down the HDD when not in use to increase runtime. There is really no downside to it.
