Help with staying, then fetching.

Haven't used an e-collar for this, but what I do is use a pull-tab (light, short leash that dangles from the collar) or slip-lead (light line that is looped through the collar so that if you let go of one end it will just slip through). I put them in a stay, grab the end of the pull tab or slip lead, tell them stay and toss the bumper/dumbell what have you. If they break, then I use the pull-tab to stop/correct them. I put them back in a...

jumping up puppy

That's the real problem. To teach them to stay off their person at home is one thing. What do you do when you are outside and people bend down and welcome the dog to slobber all over them? That seems to be the major problem I have. When I go to the store, everyone sees "Marley" and they want to pet him. His tail goes a mile a minute and he starts choking himself out. Then when they come close he jumps all over them. What...

Okay... I think I found my trainer. She was to do an evaluation at her facility to test his dog aggression... see if it's true aggression, predation, or just reactivity. I really like that idea! She's a retired K9 handler too... No promises, no fancy website, just a lot of awards! Anyway... I'll be calling her and setting up the initial appointment. www.coachforcanines.blogspot.com

Sleeping OUT of the crate
Published (2009-12-04 15:55:00)
Boone used to sleep in his crate in our room. We tried letting him sleep out of it one night (it was a really hot night and I was worried about him overheating in his crate)...he just wandered around sniffing everything, didn't settle down at all. I think part of it is the "newness" of our bedroom. They're really only allowed in the living room downstairs (we baby gate them in with us). They've been in our...

You have to be careful with physically correcting or disciplining a dog. They might respond well as a puppy but not so well when they are big enough to challenge you. That being said, puppy age is the time to experiment. I tried both Ceasar's style and positive training with only affectionate touching and finally settled on something in between. Manley responds to clamping his mouth shut when he's biting, but not to taps on the nose...

Ohhh you have a twin of my Sam.
When we walk, Sam loves to find everything to mark...it gets really annoying stopping then starting then stopping again.
So i let him mark a few times then afterwards everytime he tried to stop and mark, i give short tug, it breaks his attention and we're continuing the walk.
Sam was neutered before he started marking and lifting his leg....so he'll always do...

That sounds about right. It seems like you want them to get the idea that humping means that they have to stop playing for a bit. I guess the trick is to do it without getting too excited so that it doesn't add to the general overexcitement of the situation.
On a somewhat related note, our sweet old Alice loves to try to hump Zoe when Zoe's playing tug. Zoe doesn't even notice because she's...

Keep a long lead on the pup so that you have control. Decide on your rules and boundaries and then enforce them. If the pup moves fast, the horse will respond by moving away quickly usually triggering a chase instinct. Don't allow this because horses kick very accurately and I've known dogs who have received very serious injuries from a horse.
When I was working Aussies with sheep, cattle or...

I guess it would depend on how much time he's going to be in it. Mine ride in crates in the car that are 23.5 x 35.5 ... anything bigger and I wouldn't be able to fit two crates in there. That size is fine for the girls, and fine for my 85lb male (24 inches tall) for car rides and short periods. I have a fabric crate we use at shows that is about the same length/width and he is fine in it ...

Anything the dog likes will work. I prefer something soft, like cheese, hot dog bits, or jerky treats. If I give something hard/crunchy the natural tendency for the dog is to lower it's head, and since I am training with/for attention, that is disruptive to the process.
I don't really use enough treats on a daily basis to worry too much about salt, but one option is to boil some chicken ...

Hi. Nice to meet you.
Have you talked to an animal behaviorist and had Jack evaluated by them, or just a trainer?
You have another dog. Do you have similar problems with him/her?

Um.. wow... I don't have a problem with this with Mugen.
I guess though... Mugen sleeps in the bed with me and that does make a difference. Our bed is pretty tall and I put Mugen in the bed with us when he was still afraid of jumping down off of things. He also figured out quickly that if he wanted to sleep on the soft bed, with Mom's ankle as his pillow, he had to settle down, not chew on the...

I just taught my 3 month old pup to do stairs. I also used to foster rescued greyhounds who have never used stairs so you have to show them. Put the dog on a leash. Walk through the house a bit with the pup heeling on the leash then calmly turn to the stairs. Go slowly but keep moving forward and walk beside the dog step by step doing it together. Don't walk ahead and try to pull on the leash. ...

First he's at that age challenging everything.
Second you dont give him nearly enough exercise as best I can tell from your description. Walking doesnt count for a lab. He needs to run. play fetch.
Third you need to stop acting like his compadre and act like his pack leader. No tag or tug of war while he is treating you like a playmate. Reinforce strict rules, including NILF.
Good ...

do puppies grunt?
I think Woody is grunting at me. It is definitely not growling. (I've never heard him growl.) But when we are on a walk, and something goes in his mouth ( pine cone, leaf, twig) and I say drop it, he'll sometimes look at me with pouty eyes and grunt. He does drop it, though. Is he just unhappy that I am asking him to...

As for the technique, it works for some and doesn't for others. Varies by the dog. Some dogs completely ignore you depending on what they're doing. A firm tap to the side doesn't phase them.

Woody is almost 4 months. I wouldn't say he's totally house trained, but he has not had an accident since the second day that we got him, at 10 weeks (my fault, took too long putting on my coat. lol) Basically, I take him out after sleep, after any playtime, after meals. Usually three walks a day thrown in. He's either gated in the kitchen with me, on a leash as I go about the house, or in his ...

It's also a good idea to get down to his lvl (ie crawl) around anywhere your puppy may ever be allowed to be and look for hazards and items (courds, remotes) and other things you will not want him to chew.
Always supervise him when he is out of his crate or safe area and you can reduce the damage done but just make sure anything that you Never want teeth in is out of reach
I still have a ...

I only know of 2 methods that have worked.
1. Is a spray bottle of 50% vinegar and water. only bad thing is that it may not be handy when your pup does jump.
2. Is the swift knee.
good luck.

Too affectionate with our puppy?
I have mentioned earlier that our trainer here in Bangalore stated that the puppy is very stubborn. He attributed this to our being "too affectionate" with her. Now, most people here do want guard dogs and not so much family pets. I want a family pet and not a frightening beast. I don't think we ...
