Dove hunting

I am a pretty avid dove hunter and love having my lab out there with me, makes it about as easy and fun hunting experience possible. I have a lab just over a year and this is his first dove season. It's pretty straightforward, mostly simple mark and retrieve, perfect for a beginning dog. I tend to only try and knock down one bird at a time and not shot other birds while he is retrieving a downed bird. Just this last hunt I started...

Sorry, I misread your posts. Force fetch will not solve the sit quietly problem. I can not offer advice because I am not there yet. Some pups just are wired with high strung mentality. You may never get there. Good luck with it. Doug

Field labs and knee tears?

Quote: It's all about proper angulation of the knee joint in most cases There are some studies I read a few years back that suggested there was no link between conformation structure and ACL and CCL rupture are injuries. The University of Minnesota is conducting a study on heritability of ACL injuries now, if anyone is interested in following that check their web page. I think that many field injuries could be avoided if trainers took...

Good on you Coalman for getting Bay (and the Mrs.) into the training. Sounds like Bay is coming along well! Keep the reports coming, as they are quite enjoyable to read.

We are very blessed to work only a half mile from our house. That means Bay gets an outside and a little exercise at lunch time. This morning I filled our bird feeders for the first time since April. We don't feed during the summer as the local squirrel population is doing fine without us. Today at lunch when I took Bay outside there was a small dove on the ground at the feeder. It seemed unafraid. It let me get very close. Must be...

Puppies learn by habit and the habit is now to run with the retrieved object. A long line will be essential but even before that the "here" command needs to be perfected with or without something in their mouth. Work on just walking with your puppy and saying "here" and gently tug and release that line until they get to you then have a BIG PARTY! Eventually you will be able to add a retrievable object and...

How to teach hand signals. Hey everyone, first off i just want to say this is a great site and has helped me a lot. Hiking and the pool sound pretty entertaining to me But if you are going to work some training in there, I would say you should work both land and water (if possible), and in addition to blinds, also do some doubles (triples if he is doing them already) - and it never hurts to do some obedience drills now and then.

Welcome to the sport....it's addicting. Watch the different stakes (divisions). There is a Derby, Qualifying, Amateur and Open. The Derby will be the young dogs and Open having the highest level of trained dogs. A generic description but you get the idea. Ask questions, everyone is usually very friendly and willing to explain what's happening and what's expected. You will see some very talented ...

I believe this has been addressed a few times here, even fairly recently if you search the threads. You may find some useful tips in the previous posts. Based on what I have learned thus far, if you are just starting out with the pup you needn't worry about delivering to hand for now. Work on your basic obedience, heel, sit and here. When those are solidly understood by the dog, then you ...

Two biggest training concerns addressed! Well, I'm a little late getting Angus into hunting and hunt tests, he's 4 years now but better late than never. I wasn't concerned about his retrieving drive, as he comes from a good line of working dogs (hunting, bomb and drug sniffers). The two biggest concerns I had were with is reaction to...

Too bad you don't live closer...I train in Northern Minnesota where I think the dogs grow and thrive everyday. Nothing over their head and it's all about building them up as puppies. I have two young dogs who are go-getters and as much as I want them to learn, having fun is just as important in their young lives! Good Luck to you. Missi Roland Tra-Bran Retrievers

I guess you need to figure out what you want out of her. If you want her to hold it properly and continually until commanded to drop, then Force Fetching is an option, but not one I'm sure I'd do with a companion. FF is about pressure and working through pressure, and I don't know that you need a companion to be able to master the pressure.

Well, she's a little young for force fetch, but that's my advice. It kind of sounds like there's no desire. Without desire, nothing is going to make the dog do it enthusiastically. She could be dealing with her adult teeth coming in which might be making her mouth sore, or she may not be that excited about a bumper. How often have you been tossing a bumper? Has she had a live bird? ...

I would assume that this is probably true, but not because of breeding if that is what you are implying (at least not that I have ever heard of). Rather, I would assume it is because they work like mad in all terrain conditions - they are dog athletes, and like all intense athletes, the risk of injury is higher.
