Need help deciphering a mitten...

Yes, when you knit the sts with the scrap yarn, then reknit them with the mitten yarn, you're creating an extra row with the scrap yarn, but there's only 3 sts showing knit on the scrap yarn. When you take it out later to work on the thumb, you'll have the original 3 sts plus the 3 sts from those you knit above the scrap yarn. So that will give you 6 sts and you're probably to pick up a couple extra on either side of the 3....

k1b stitch
Published (2009-11-08 20:28:00)
It depends. K1b can mean knit one below, but occasionally it is used to mean K1 tbl. To knit one below you knit right into the center of the knit stitch below the first stitch on the left hand needle. Then you let the stitch above it slide off as you finish the knit stitch. It will be unknit. Which makes sense with your pattern? And is there an explanation of the abbreviations used anywhere in the book, on the web-site, with the pattern, or...

Blocking Acrylic?

Well, you can block it. I believe you will have to do it every time though unlike wool that holds blocking longer. I just toss in the washer and dryer, but I hope it works for you!

I block EVERYTHING I knit, with the exception of blankets! Blocking improves the appearance of anything! If it's perfect BEFORE blocking...it is 'perfect-er' AFTER blocking!

I actually usually use worsted for those mittens as well, but then adjust the number of sts for it, since getting 6 sts per inch in worsted makes for a great, dense fabric, but makes my hands hurt! But for someone just starting out with making mittens, it's probably easier to follow their directions exactly. But OMG, Judy D, whatever were they thinking by letting this go out of print?:-) Isn't it the best?!

Through a poster's suggestion I was able to contact the designer. Here is how the pattern should read: thumbs are as follows:LEFT THUMB- needle1:k to end. needle2:k1, knit next 3sts(4sts) with a piece of scrap yarn. slip those 3sts (4sts)of scrap yarn onto the left needle and k across them with the working yarn, k2 (k1). needle3: k to end. needle4: k to end. **if you have done this correctly, you will have 24sts (28sts) total for your...

You can do it like a knit cast on only done purlwise. Put you right needle into the st as if to purl, draw the yarn through, but leave the st on the left needle and put the new st on there too. Repeat.

If you copied and pasted, they must have been in a column, this is how it should read: On needle 2: K1, K3 with 5" piece piece of scrap yarn. Slip 3 Back onto left needle and knit over scrap yarns sts. Continue in St st until piece measures 3 1/4" from beginning of St.st section." You shouldn't get 3 stitches per cast on, so something is going wrong for you. http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer05/FEATsum05TT.ht ml Here are some still pictures of cast-ons, so maybe that will help; or try one of the other methods just to get you started. Not the backward-loop, though, that one doesn't give you a good start.

They really are just saying to put your neck and armhole shapings on the edges opposite of what they were on the right side. For the right side, you started with the decrease at the beginning of the row for the neck. On the left side you're ending with the decrease for the neck shaping. When you do the armhole shaping, bind off the first 5 stitches at the edge opposite your neck shaping.

If your pattern says to cast on, then you simply cast on, even if it's in the middle of the row. Don't worry. There is a method to their madness.... you just might not see it right away. Of course in this type of circumstance, you may have to use a different cast on method than you usually use, for instance you won't be able to do the long-tail cast on. The easiest cast on here would be ...

HOw many stitches are you using per repeat of the (bind off 3, k2). I bet you use 5, which was what I would have used, but to make this work you need to use six per repeat. I would have written the first row as: k1 (k1, bind off three, k2) repeat until last stitch, k1 98 (original cast on ) - 2 (beginning and ending stitch) = 96 96 divided by 6 stitches per repeat = 16 16 x ...

You don't have to have a steam iron. Use a damp towel over the item and just hold the hot iron over it. You can touch down briefly but not hard and do not press, that'll flatten it out. Knit up a sample of the acrylic and practice with it.

I always put the stitch marker that marks the beginning of a row in one stitch. In other words: when you come to the stitch that is the 1st st of the new round, I knit that stitch and then place the marker and then keep knitting. If I'm going to leave it for a while I always know that the marker is between stitch one and 2. You can use them on each needle except right at the ends. When I...

Selvages I have a pattern for a cape that has slits where you put your arms through. The cape is divided into three parts for making these slits. I went looking for information about left hand knitting, but didn't find anything that was very clear to me. It is 1:00 a.m. and I can't keep looking. Nooooo, don't ignore it!!! You do that first stitch. Then do the 12 st repeat all around the bag. Each round, you do that single st, and then the 12 st repeat. So let's say you cast on 145 sts. You would do that single st, then the 12 st repeat 12 times. If you don't, your Fair Isle pattern won't come out right.

The afterthought thumb may be a way to go, I don't know of any videos, but it's pretty easy. Knit till you get to the thumb sts, pick up some waste yarn and knit those. Transfer them back to the left needle and knit again with your working yarn. Then keep on with the mittens in the round. Take out the scrap yarn and put the sts on your needles and knit the thumb, you may want to pick up one st at...
