Yeah, Suginami Ward is a pretty high-class, high-cost area. Maybe it does include airfare....?

I am planning a stills shoot featuring a couple of kendo-ka, in a West Tokyo location (not in a Dojo!). It will be sometime in January I believe, and I would like to hear from anyone that has late afternoon/early evening availability, weekdays probably rather than weekends. Additionally, if anyone knows of a rooftop location that is legally accessible, that would be cool also. Thanks Peter

It's well known there's no kendo in Tokyo or anywhere in Japan ;-)

for these first guidances. I will check your advise through the net and try to get a better understanding. Traditional training rather the big int' event would be more my cup of tea indeed. Soulslide, Paris (FR)

Be careful when you plan on coming because dojo generally close or have limited practice during the holiday seasons (Golden Week, O-Bon and O-shogatsu). This includes both private dojo and government/prefectural gyms/dojo. Happy keiko!

Is the photo shoot a paid gig? Does it include airfare to and from Japan?

Why don't you ask to go to the kitamoto seminar? You would get some of the top sensei as both teachers and motodachi. You would meet 40+ people from all over the world. Relatively cheap as you would get housing thrown in. You need your federations's sponsorship to go and if you're from France probably need to be at least 3dan... Look for Kitamoto threads to get details... HTH Cesare

Welcome Ziggey! Sounds like you are enjoying kendo. 17 maybe late in Japan but you have got a headstart on more than half of the non-Japanese who do kendo. Where are you located?

Its nice that you have so much free time to train in japan. If I had the time I could easily train 12 hours a week or more within a 3 hours or so drive from home but I struggle to even have enough time for 4-6 hours a week of training. Obviously in 'most' other countries one does not have the ability to go to as many practices in Japan. As far as the grading, part of the additional time is due to...

I believe your friend was referring to the recent push to make budo cumpulsory in Japanese schools, not necessarily kendo. This is to happen starting from junior high schools beginning in 2011. This might shed some light on the subject but unfortunately I don't have a specific date that this was written. Perhaps Alex can shed some light on this as he is listed on the original site as a guest...
