I just brought back a few shinai and bokuto from Japan no probs. So long as they're well packaged there should be no probs checking them in. As cabin luggage though I think they'd be no go. You could probably wrap them in cloth and then tape them up. You might find that they'll be
unwrapped and inspected if they look a bit dodgy in the x-ray though.
