Stright Pipes ?
Published (2009-12-03 17:33:00)
Well for one the shorter stroke allows for greater piston speeds. And the larger bore that goes along with it means more valve area and less shrouding. Greater valve area means you can flow more air/fuel through that air pump we call an engine. Not to be disagreeable with anyone but straight pipes do not make power. In almost all applications they will in fact cost power.

Raising the stock mufflers?
Published (2009-12-03 20:32:00)
I have been posting around about swapping out the stock mufflers on my '82 KZ750H3 for something similar but smaller, and getting replys that the stock 'megaphone' type mufflers were the best for the bike (that with others the engine might not run as well). Okay, makes sense. Here's the problem; I recently lowered the rear end 3" with struts and installed a springed solo seat (I'm slowly bobbing this thing)....

Decent chrome spray paint?

I saw something that looked promising in WalMart recently. I don't think that it had any high temperature capability, so fenders, but not exhaust. I didn't buy it, but the can and cap looked convincing. Probably satisfactory at 10 or more feet.

turn your idle down to 1000rpm BEFORE playing with anything else... if the idles to hight it messes w/ all kinds of stuff... if it still hangs with the idle turned down to a 1000rpm then turn your pilot screws OUT till it comes to idle quickly/smoothly....- if ya have to go beyond 3 turns out then pilot is to small) make sure the grip isnt hanging up on the switch pod or bar end, make sure throttle cables are lubed and throttle snaps closed

Bike still won't start...

Got it up and running. Apparently for the two days that I've been trying to start it with an unclean carb it ran the battery dry. And yes it did run the first day without charing the battery after I put it in.

bike won't idle without choke
Published (2009-12-03 04:33:00)
The quality of the fuel they are selling leaves a lot to be desired. E85 because it contains alcohol will and does absorb water/moisture from the air. The gasoline/alcohol mix tends to seperate after sitting around, so what you've got in your bike's tank may be what was at the bottom of the filling station's gas tank. Many riders have had good luck with Seafoam and another little cheaper cleaner is Berryman's B-12. Both...

Just replace them with some slip-ons. If you change the airbox to pods you will need to rejet but just changing the mufflers you should not have to.
The stock mufflers are a compromise to pass the inspections but are not necessarily the best for power. Ignore those who tell you to keep it stock.

DO NOT USE MINERAL OIL IN A DOT SYSTEM !! unless you like rebuilding things.... they use mineral oil in mountain bike brake systems and some euro car clutch/brake systems but USA uses DOT ONLY......
and yes you use the same fluid for brakes and clutch.... DOT 3, 4,5.1 ONLY....

What about this? Looking at my frame just behind the tank, I realised that if I welded anything across the frame for the front seat mount attachment, I'd have a problem. Either I'd have trouble getting the air cleaner cap out, or if I left that clear, I'd have trouble getting the battery out. Then this idea hit me; use 1/8" steel plate bolted over the battery cage mounts, then mount the front ...

Please give more background info:
What kind of bike?
How long have you owned it?
Have you done any work to it; is this stock or modified?

It is possible that one of the internal runs on the rear rocker box cover
gasket is leaking. What this does is starve the HLA for oil ( causes it to
tick) and floods the valve area with oil and causes the engine to use oil.
Your symtoms seem to add up to this.

Stock carbs? Have an airbox? Manual slide carbs? Opening them too fast?
Lots of possibilities here. More data would help.

I think the temper of the metal might be a concern doing that but I've
never tried anything like that so can't speak from experience.

From the schematic at babbits it appears the longer threaded end goes into
the cylinder head. Number 5 on the picture.

I'd suggest two things: One, get some Seafoam and a funnel from a local parts store and add it to your gas. Second is, if possible, run a battery maintainer on the bike overnight. On a side note, if you leave the bike outside, it may be good to get a cover to keep the days warmth in it.
If that does not work, more in depth carb cleaning may need to be done.
Or do like what I did for two ...
