Is OT more than just play?

NAC in Gloucester, Massachusetts said: This person brings up good points. OT was founded on bringing people back through meaningful activities and work that was purposeful and the just right challange that engaged their spirit and was crafted to provide challanges and meaning through the process of learning the task and making a product that showed their efforts. Why have we given that part of our craft over to activity therapists? As a...

Rick OT in Charlotte, North Carolina said: You'd best do your homework and make very, very sure that this is the arena you want to pursue ---- the time and $$ is extensive. It's not a real job for a real man ---- it's dominated by women and lacks anything that should appeal to the male gender. "How is it like?" I think you mean, "What it is like?" What does the classroom set up have to do with the OT school? I think there are other more important questions to ask --- like, how competitive is the program, how many students are accepted, what are the instructors like? Just a few suggestions for someone who's pursuing higher education. You sound perfect for the program.

Fieldwork Failure
Published (2009-12-29 00:00:00)
Hoping to get some advice....I was dismissed from my master's program because of failing both fieldworks. I am bright and very capable, but ended up with two very bad situations. My attorney indicated that winning reinstatement is next to impossible, although I am still going through the process. That said, since I am short of my masters with classes that are non-tranferable, does anyone have any suggestions as to a career path I might...

As terrible as you feel now, it is a blessing in disguise. The fieldwork is just a taste of the OT world. You would face this evil on a daily basis if you had continued. I want you to know that. You can do just about anything you like now. If you like health care there is nursing which leads to more careers and as far as I know they don't make it their mission to fail you. If you like teaching then you can teach. You can do chiropractor,...

Sorry you had to go through this. Do not let the field of OT make you feel like a failure. Just remember it is the occupational therapy field itself that is a failure. This happens a lot unfortunately. It is probably that you did not learn to kiss up or buy off the right people. Did you not bring donuts in everyday? That usually passes you, unless the OT is on a diet and then you may have done this and made her mad. Just know that is has...

So what makes you think that OTR's are more qualified then COTA's. Just because someone has a higher degree does not mean they know more. Most OTR's get there experience in the classroom. COTA's on the other hand get most of there experience on the job... hands on. Experience is worth more than it's weight in gold. Who does the majority of patient care. Why do you think being an OTR ...

I had the same question. I will be attending an MOT program in the Fall, and my understanding is that as long as your school has a relationship with a facility in that state, and you can arrange your own living situation, then you can go almost anywhere in the US for fieldwork. I have not started my program yet so can anyone confirm this who has gone through a program?

2) At the brain unit, I watched the OT try to get a stroke patient to put on clothes. The lady couldn't do it at all. The same thing happened with a second stroke patient. With a third patient, the OT was trying to have her identify cones on the injured side of her body. The patient couldn't do it. As a result, I have a nagging feeling that OT doesn't do much for a person. What ...

Yep ---- you're right. In every SNF, it's the same ole, same ole with OT. Just a drain. Don't have any great ideas for another career with an OTA background, but what I would recommend is to get out of OT and get a job doing something, anywhere just to rehab yourself from the whole OT experience. You may not be aware of the affect it's had on your mental and emotional health. But, ...
