I hope that anyone choosing to train in this field does their RESEARCH..... Know info, other than what the schools, articles and jobs online say....it's rough out there for many GREAT R.D.H.'s....and even if you know your worth and have all the tech and cont. ed and certificates beyond the training at schools....and whether you are very good at what you do...to those who say I'm scared of new R.D.H.'s competing with...

MarisaL in San Diego, California said: Nursing isn't much better. The reason there are so many nursing jobs is because of the time it takes to complete a nursing program and the prerequisites, many people give up before completing it. But you have to ask yourself, WHY are there still so many nursing jobs when all of the other health fields are overcrowded? It's because nursing is one of the hardest, least desirable positions. You...

This is probably the case in high volume mall practices in Vancouver...". Hygiene Degree

First of all, DH school is supposed to be very tough and thorough to maintain the integrity of the profession of dental hygiene. And since when is it the school's responsibility to find client for you? I went to an 'old school' public DH school, and we had to find plenty, if not most of our own clients. We also had to arrange all of our own bookings and could bring in our own relatives. It did add to the stress level, though. I...

There's quite a demand for hygienists here, but it's slowly changing. Wages are good, starting at around $40/hr.
VCC is very competitive and has a long waiting list and the private colleges are quite expensive.
Read through the forum a bit though, it's a very tough job on the body and very repetitive. I do enjoy it for the most part, but could never do it full time.

I would go for DH. I was having a hard time deciding between nursing and DH as well. Because I got accepted into nursing first, I went for it. Just finished the first semester. The clinicals are horrible. Definitely would not like to deal on a daily bases with what I saw. I feel like I aged 10 years in these last 4 months. I attended a private accredited school. It is their responsibility to educate you, and make sure you are a competent dental hygienist. It is not their responsibility to find your clients. Life is full of rules, try working for a DDS. They all have rules get used to them. They are in place for a reason.

ashley.... as far as i know to teach DA in a vocational school you need your lisc., 5 years in the field, a b.a. or b.s. and a teaching credential. at a community college it varies by the school, but the requirements are pretty similar.
for RDH you need a master's, but i'm not sure if it need be in hygiene or if it can be in something different like public health, education, etc.

Also, what was your GPA like if you don't mind sharing? (Feel free not to if you don't want to)
Do you your RDA? And what is the application process like? Interview needed? Statement of purpose?
Thanks in advance.

You guys crack me up. Search RDH in any state, even CA and you will find us all crying about working 25 hours in a week with no health insurance and no vacation pay.
It is nearly all part time work with no benefits. Wait until the dentist who 'owns you now' gives you a 10-99 and says as far as he is concerned you are a private contractor. Quit? Yeah good luck finding another job...
