You could crank on it for a minute or two before getting gas. Did you change the fuel tank strainer when you replaced the sending unit? You can also try pulling the feed hose off the fuel pump and blowing some air back toward the tank to clear a clog. You could also have a rotten or split fuel hose from the tank to the hard line and be sucking air. That's all I can think of, maybe carnuck or others have more ideas.

84 J20 Transfer Case Vacuum Line

NP208 didn't have vacuum anything. Just a breather hose that goes up to the firewall. Could be the linkage is frozen from lack of use (I spray mine down with PB'Laster once or twice a year) If it's auto and all you get is grinding, then the trans clutches are fried. Putting the trans in neutral sometimes works while rolling slow, but shutting the truck off, moving the lever then restarting is the only way my '84 would...

Fuel tank suddenly holds more gas?
Published (2009-11-23 20:03:00)
The old unit was probably giving you false readings. Reading too low will cause you to go to the gas station earlier, leaving more fuel in the tank before fill up. The bad side of this is if that is true, you now run a greater risk of drinking the tank dry since the gauge won't read as low with the same amount of fuel in it.

Fuel tank suddenly holds more gas?

Thats kind of what I was leaning towards. Was there another fuel tank size option besides the 20.3 gallon tank. From my estimates after the fill up I am sitting somewhere around 24 to 25 gallons.

Cruise and the blend doors of the heating system both rely on vacuum. Betting that your hissing sound is a vacuum leak. Find the source and the two symptoms probably go away.

new fuel pump, no fuel...
Published (2009-11-25 10:37:00)
thanks for the suggestions. i haven't flushed the hard lines. my brother has an air compressor so i will try firing air through to see if that helps. i replaced the line from the pump to filter to carb; it was a mess of old rubber hose combined with wadded up steel line, so no clogs there. i checked the other rubber hoses that have been spliced into the hard line and replaced one. the sending unit came with a new screen on the end of it....

You say you replaced the gas tank, the sending unit, fuel pump, and the fuel filter. I didn't see any mention of you flushing the crap out of the fuel line that runs from the tank to the pump and the one from the pump to the carb. Should also pull the carb apart and clean out anything that got past the filter. Dennis

Don't believe everything you read on Craigslist. All of them in those years had the woodgrain, so there's nothing "California Woody" about it. It probably has a salvage title now too.

I'm not sure. Have you tried to disconnect the starter cable from the solenoid and see if it still drains your battery? That might help isolate the problem. I don't know if we can blame it on the starter unless you know it is bad, then you would need to replace it before diagnosing further. There are other ways batteries can drain overnight, and usually the starter isn't getting juice until you ...
