Blues for two seemed like a really good CD so I am going to get that one. The "band" in the video is presented as "The City of New Orleand" (in the aftermath of Katrina). Is there actuall band like this without the drum and bass out there?

You need to start looking into some John Zorn....... Try something slightly manic, like Naked City.

Jazz is indeed a large topic but I chose it and I may not change my mind. My goal is to introduce these 9 jazz styles to my teacher (and my class) and I don't want them to get bored because of the fact that they (most of them) don't give a damn about jazz. I want to show them the evolution of a music genre and they will maybe say "Oh I didn't know this was jazz music! I've always said I didn't like jazz but...

Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Jackie Maclean, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Cannonball Adderley, Johhny Griffin, geez and that's just some of the sax guys only.... I'd be happy getting a tatoo to any of the above...

Karl mentioned Larry Coryell and I immediately thought of this album, Introducing the Eleventh House . I think it would sound great in your shop, Anyubis!

Where next from Kind Of Blue? I listen to Miles Davis - Kind of Blue quite often (and Mingus In a Souful Mood) but don't own any other Jazz. What could I try that would be in the same vein as 'Kind of Blue'? I've been listening to Dave Brubeck lately but it didn't quite hit the spot. Thanks, JB

There's no real way around it, it just sucks to do the first few transcriptions. Also, start studying solfege, it's very helpful.

I'm a piano player, and Mark Levine's "the jazz piano book" is exactly what any pianist needs - i don't know about guitar, i suppose it could work the same way. I like your ideas to move through the evolution of jazz in the 20th century. Miles Davis introduced many musicians and many new styles that broke all the rules. His introduction to cool jazz right through to his stage of fusion. He'd...

I like how the group is named Dead Prez and my favorite jazz musician, Lester Young, was called 'Prez' or 'Pres' (I'm sure they knew this when they named their group). It's tough for me to think of similar things. Maybe you could start with some soul jazz like Jimmy Smith? Here's a cool link to a Jimmy Smith concert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYosYlqiBOk If you like that there's a ...
