Thanks for the suggestions... I got to listen to the Bose model at a Bose
store near me. It was pretty crisp at low volume, but I thought the sound
broke up a little when it was
cranked up - so based solely on the reviews,
I thought I'd check out the Apple unit. Afterwards, I noticed that Klipsch
has a version of the same idea, that I may have checked out. Anyway, can't
wait for delivery now... ...

I have a 240 gram (talk about overkill)
audiophile LP which plays quite successfully on my mid 90s Michelle deck, so the 180s are no problem.
Why only scrape every half revolution -- sounds like maybe one of the suspension springs has grown weak. Try checking if the platter + LP is still flat

I have seen similar info at The
Louisiana Music Factory's web site. I assume it means the CD is not professonally manufactured. If I really wanted the music, I would buy it that way. I have made over a hundred CD-Rs, both in my TEAC recorder and my computer, and they play everywhere I use them, and they sound fine.
