180gm vinyl problem
Published (2009-11-04 19:50:00)
You'll have to forgive me but buying 180-240 gram vinyl to be played on what sounds like substandard turntables doesn't quite make sense. Like buying primo radials to throw on a junkyard dog, no? That's a little harsh so I'll just say that before I bought another high-priced heavyweight piece of vinyl, I'd invest on getting the turntable to a pro for a tune-up!

Just for the record the problem was NOT with the vinyl but with my turntable which needed a bit of attention. I have now attended to it and the vinyl plays perfectly. Sorry for bothering you all. Back to Joe Harriott...

CD-R manufactured on demand...

Quote: I have a dream, that someday there will be a giant universal database with literally every album ever recorded archived on it. You request something, you pay for it, the artist gets paid, and they send you the file in whatever form you desire. mp3, aac, wav, aiff, alac whatever. If you want to pay extra, they can even print up the original packaging and put it on a CD for you. Lookin forward to it! That sounds good to me! I download...

So it seems that sometimes you need a good heavy pressing to M.O.T. your turntable eh? - in which case mine must be functioning just fine, as I recently bought a couple of original BYG/Actuel LPs - and they are some of the heaviest pieces of vinyl I've ever picked up!

I have seen similar info at The Louisiana Music Factory's web site. I assume it means the CD is not professonally manufactured. If I really wanted the music, I would buy it that way. I have made over a hundred CD-Rs, both in my TEAC recorder and my computer, and they play everywhere I use them, and they sound fine. In fact, I am listening to an anthology I made right now (jazz from Jazziz ...

I have a 240 gram (talk about overkill) audiophile LP which plays quite successfully on my mid 90s Michelle deck, so the 180s are no problem. Why only scrape every half revolution -- sounds like maybe one of the suspension springs has grown weak. Try checking if the platter + LP is still flat

Thanks for the suggestions... I got to listen to the Bose model at a Bose store near me. It was pretty crisp at low volume, but I thought the sound broke up a little when it was cranked up - so based solely on the reviews, I thought I'd check out the Apple unit. Afterwards, I noticed that Klipsch has a version of the same idea, that I may have checked out. Anyway, can't wait for delivery now... ...

I really like the sound of "Smokestack" and "At Ease with Coleman Hawkins" and "Speak Like a Child" and "Right on Brother." I'm getting new speakers too, in fact struck a deal for two pairs from Decware High Fidelity Engineering http://www.decware.com/newsite/Radials.htm , their two latest versions of the "Radial" speakers I've had for years, the "ErR" and the soon to be debuted "Retail" ...

iPod library strictly based on mobility; music to drive to, music for the el/CTA bus, music for when I'm out walking around, anything to make a commute a less unpleasant experience. Many of my favorite albums are not on my iPod because they're not necessarily albums I want to listen to during rush hour. I do leave a little space for a playlist for an anticipated occasion which may include temp ...
