It was pretty crisp at low volume, but I thought the sound broke up a little when it was cranked up - so based solely on the reviews, I thought I'd check out the Apple unit. I have a 240 gram (talk about overkill) audiophile LP which plays quite successfully on my mid 90s Michelle deck, so the 180s are no problem. Why only scrape every half revolution -- sounds like maybe one of the suspension springs has grown weak. Try checking if the platter + LP is still flat
