Sounds like you're very ambitious and usually do your homework, but admit to not doing as much this time. Please get a book and do some reading. You haven't put any waterproofing behind your backerboard on two walls? It's not too late to correct that mistake. Get a gallon or two of liquid waterproofing membrane and put it on the surface of your Hardie board. That would be something like Redguard, found at Home Depot. Yes, make...

Overlap tile in tub wall corners?

Sure, it'll be better than the latex grout caulks. Look for Laticrete or TEC brand.

The GE 2 is neutral cure and GE 1 is acid cure. So, you'll be better with the 2 as long as it matches the grout well.

The Uponor product is about 7" x 48" each, and my guess is you have to screw them down mightily to minimize movement under a tile floor. And, it's one thing for THEM to allow tile and another entirely for the CBU/thinset/membrane manufacturers to say their products will work over the panels. I had one job that briefly considered Warmboard and my feeling was that a floor tile install was going to be very involved,...

jeffaah, I suggest you contact the maker of the hydronic system you want to use and ask them for two things: an installation spec that they have developed specifically for their product, and ASTM C627 test results. Without both of these, your installation is just a guess and you carry all the liability.

Out of curiosity, do you mean a heat mat or hydronic flooring? Either way, yes. Versabond is Customs lower end. I like Megaflex myself, but it is pricey, probably 3 times the Versabond price. But there is a warranty with using Wonderboard and Megaflex installations according to manufacturer's instructions.

You require a sloped floor before the water proofing method, whichever you choose. Better read a few books on setting tile and preparing the pan before you proceed.

Would you provide info on the changes? I used Durock a few times and the number one reason I discontinued using it was due to the odor. The weight didn't cause too much concern though any improvements to lighten it up??

Joe, To bad your architect is that far out of the loop. Definitly be concerned with the durability of any stone or ceramic flooring in a gym with weight lifting equipment. He should have specified "Gorilla Grip" or some such other flooring specific to that environment. This matterial also comes with transition peices and different colors. Additionally, there are also companies that ...

Hi Charles, thank you! For shimming out CBU I think the most cost-effective option is to rip a sheet of 1/4:" plywood in the shop and install the rips on the studs with a crown stapler. I think this extra step is worth it. I just inspected a shower that looked great in all respects except the bottom course of tile kicked out of plumb by ~3/8" in the lower 12" because of the folds of ...

All throughout that thread I was scratching my head thinking about what he was trying to accomplish. I just chalked it up to confusion and not fully understanding what he had read on his part. “It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. Start with the installation instructions for the particular stove. They will specify the distances from the stove to adjacent walls. If you comply with those, there won't be enough heat to cause a problem with standard installations. For yours I'd use Hadibacker and modified thinset.
