I did find a company teaching the class in Wilmington, MA for $195.00 http://www.ieetrains.com There are some really old houses here in Danvers. I'm trying to finish some wood gutter repairs on one built in 1862. I don't get the old'y but goodies that often but when I do I enjoy it. Knowing that you work with 200+ year old dust you should be a carpentry poster boy for how safe lead paint is and after we can go talk to Al Gore...

ACT on EVERY idea!

I guess what I am really tring to ask, is it worth it or wise to take a smaller home say about 2000 sq ft 3 bdrm, and remove one of the rooms to use the extra space to enlarge? I see alot of these smaller homes that could be made into something really nice for a single couple to live in if the one extra room was removed. Leaving extra space for closets or whatever you may comeup with as far as design is concerned.

We have had a lot of sucess with exterior projects such as roofs, we have done a fair amount of roofs this past season. I have no problem with doing them, I kind of enjoy the after pictures of the work done. Basically, we would take anything I am not very picky at what we would take on. Some interior work would be nice since exterior work is kind of at a dead stop now due to cold and snow. I would really like to start at least scheduling jobs...

Like the overall housing market, the US home improvement industry is mired in a severe downturn. Coming on the heels of unprecedented growth over the past decade, this reversal has created difficult challenges for both homeowners that need to make improvement decisions and firms that serve this market. Indeed, by the time the recovery begins, the entire industry is expected to undergo a marked transition on both the demand and supply sides...

Published (2010-01-01 15:02:00)
The lead safe classes are available later this month at the Builders Show in Las Vegas. If you are coming and don't have classes available locally, this might be a way to get the certification out of the way. If you are interested, you will need to take 2 classes at the Builders Show. One class is book, and one class is field. You need both to be certified. The book class is on Sunday the 17th from 9 am to 2 pm. The second class in the...

Timely advice, Robert. I bet most of us are guilty at one time or another of forgetting or all together ignoring your message, even though we know better. Sonny was good at giving us the proverbial kick in the butt when it came to being proactive with our businesses. However, it seems like it's been awhile since we've heard words reminiscent of his around here. Seems only fitting him we think of ...

I am in a similar boat (biz size wise) and have written handbooks for larger businesses before. They become as you mention - long, legal and seldom ever read. For your size - you need to start with some policies and procedures first. That is really the important part. Start easy - pay days, hours, penalties for being late, benefits and job tasks and descriptions. Keep making "policy / ...

Are they both one-day classes? I did a similar one on business plans a while ago thru my local SCORE chapter. It was mildly valuable but not terribly. It was mostly geared toward people trying to set up retail or wholesale businesses and were going to need financing - the business plan was something a start-up could take to a bank or investors. And on the marketing front, my (not ...

I can see the shakeup happening. Home builders have become remodelers or gone out of business. Remodelers have had to lower their prices and decrease profits to stay alive. I personally have decided to attract more customers by focusing on more handyman or home maintenance type work. If they see I do a good job with the smaller project and customer service I should have an opportunity in the ...

My first reaction is that this is not your customer. Quality work doesn't always mean high dollar fancy jobs but it does mean a product you are proud of even if you don't show pictures of it. I'm doing a job now with Cultured marble shower, acoustic "popcorn" ceiling and laminate flooring (not all in the same room). It's nothing to write home about but I'm giving it the same attention as a ...
