Tom, Thanks. I had of course Googled for it, but without the malware tag, and found nothing helpful. From your search I found a link to an article suggesting the use of Sysinternals RegDelNull.exe, and using this (RegDellNull HKLM\SOFTWARE\Xanthic) it took only a few seconds to remove the rogue key. Okay Kind Sirs and Madams: How do I remove IE-8? WIthin the CP, there is NO REMOVE button! Dwnld'd IE-7 - hoping that installing same would boot out IE-8. It did not. Why remove IE-8? 'Cause it is slow, very slow. PC "runs" fast; IE-8 is torture, so to speak. Someone smartly suggested that I figure out why it is slow since millions of copies are being used dails. Good suggestion. ALL of Office 7 works like a charm....

Personally I use Debian, since I prefer to decide what software is on the
system instead of being led by the nose. And since Debian is the basis of
most ready-to-use distros, if you can do it with Ubuntu you can do it with
Debian, although it might take a bit more head-scratching to get there.
Not that Ubuntu isn't a good system, it is, especially for those who just
want to use...
