I had the same pain in my chest/armpit area a few years ago. I went overboard and decided to work through the pain. About a week later I put 345 lbs on the flat bench and gunned for a few reps. Second full rep - TEAR. Ended up with a partial tear in that area. Automatically I took a month off from the gym. The next month very light weights for really high reps. So on and so forth. Moral ...

I would agree with this 100%. I have been following a power based routine for the last 6 weeks and I've had great results with it. I would have never guessed that my body would respond the way it did with this type of training.

Why not...
Many competitive powerlifter -
bodybuilder will take a long break before hitting the weight again.
The best thing is that you probably won't even loose a big deal of strength. If you do, you will soon start to hit new PR afterward anyway.

some of the strongest raw
benchers don't use much of a tuck at all - get
away from the idea that you need to bench like a shirted lifter. Elbows
should be in enough to save the shoulders from hurting, but don't lose
leverage for the sake of doing it like you read in an article on shirted
lifting.
