No longer does AMD have to fight tooth and nail to get volume. It could now focus on niche, high margin markets/products where Intel doesnt compete directly and be very profitable. If there's a profitable niche somewhere, why wouldn't Intel compete? I'm beginning to see this deal as Intel bought all of AMD's excuses for $1.25 Billion. Not a bad deal at all.

It could now focus on niche, high margin markets/products where Intel doesnt compete directly If there is part of the x86 processor market that is 1) high margin, and 2) too small to interest Intel, what makes you think servicing it will generate enough revenue and profit to support AMD? If you compare their potential starting points in their current x86 design portfolios and their available design resources what makes you think AMD can...

Yes, those seekingalpha transcripts often have funny errors. "Their forbearing" rather than "therefore bearing" was another I saw.

The take away is that the settlement of the IP/subsidiary agreement was the platform for settling the anti-trust case. That agreement called for in house council for both companies to meet and confer over the issues in that IP contract. I have not yet seen a copy of the settlement and when I do, I have heard that the IP term details are contained in an unpublished addendum.. But I would hope that the agreement limits GF from using Intel IP for...

Adding a second integer core to a Bulldozer module increases AMD's die spaced by ~5%. But we get an 80%+ performance increase. I think a '0' has been missed in between the '5' and the '%' ;-) p4 http://amd.com.cn/chcn/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/Chuck_Moore_6-10-05.pdf

Sorry, didn't think it crossed the line, or rather, was actually really "partisan" in a strict sense (perhaps intraparty factionalist? :) ), but on reflection, might be a distraction.

But surely you do not disagree with the original claim that TSMC wins over GloFo are bad for AMD and good for Intel? Surely TSMC wins using Intel IP are good for Intel. Not convinced that there isn't enough demand, long-term, for cutting edge GF foundry development. Like I said, the dynamics of the market have changed; Even if AMD had not spun off GF, the dynamics would be utterly different right...

There has never been an x86 manufacturer of AMD's caliber running on a fabless model. AMD is not an x86 manufacturer. They are an x86 designer who needs to use a foundry with a process designed by a committee. They will rely on not terribly friendly external production teams who are already supporting multiple other products. If they choose to use multiple foundries they will have multiple ...

And that means that somehow or other AMD has to bear them. With GloFlo off AMD's books I don't see how they have to bear those costs. GloFlo can't charge the under utilization costs to AMD for wafers can they? Won't AMD be just another customer and GloFlo will have to charge something resembling market rates?

Elmer, from the Q1 AMD CC: Serena Pajore – CLSA Hey, Bob, just a question on gross margins. You said the factory utilization is impact in the gross margin both on a consolidated basis as well as for the Product Company. I’m just wondering, I was under the impression that the Product Company is more or less a [fabulous] company and I’m just wondering how the fixed cost is allocated between these ...

I am vacation travel and have not had a chance to comment. My thoghts are: A. AMD gets a fresh lease on life. The Intel cash, the end of the legal shadow over the Foundry aggreement, and the ability to download the Global Founderies stock give AMD the financial headroom to try out the new business model. It can also raise more capital now. B. Intel could have settled early this year for a lot less...
