Hi, That's funny because I was just watching Dr. Jeffrey Proctor's lecture on the ICA website back from August and he mentioned using Zyrtec if Atarax is too sedating....so there's another IC specialist who recommends it J-your nursing knowledge impresses me Jill

I started Zyrtec a month ago and lo and behold, the bladder feels better (not great, but better). Go figure.

That's really good to know guys! I have Zirtec as well.I might have to switch because the Allegra seems to only work for my allergies 50% of the time anyway. It makes sense I guess,I've been taking it for like ever. :P

Can someone tell me what the difference between using Zyrtec and Atarax? I have taken zyrtec for years for allergies. Will it help my IC at all?

I can't really directly answer your question but I can tell you that benadryl seems to be working the same for me as hydroxyzine did. (I had to get off hydroxyzine because of crazy food cravings!!)

Atarax is sometimes used as a sedative during surgery prep. It's more sedating than Benadryl. I don't know why it works so well for IC, but it does help most people who try it.

I have taken claritin, allegra, and zyrtec sporadically in the time I've had IC and can't say that any of them have helped. I don't know why atarax helps with IC symptoms where other allergy meds may not...hopefully someone here can explain.

And pharmacologically related to Atarax. I would think that Zyrtec would be very similar to Atarax-- I understand that Zyrtec is basically long acting and a "me too" drug-- after the patent of Atarax has LONG expired. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I remeber. Zyrtec offers convenience in a --I believe-- 24 hour dose. I would have gone w/Z except that I have to carefully titrate any daytime dose of...

antihistamines The long debate topic. for me personally hydroxizine works best for IC, but although it does not make me sleep, I dream vividly on it, I really don't like the hung over feeling from it, I think I gave it a fair try. I used it for 7 mos slowly increasing the dosage, from 10 mg to 50 mg per day. I stopped it for a while and tried it again. The next time I tried it I still had the same reaction which I think is pretty normal,...

zyrtec is actually a metabolite of hydroxyzine so i think that may make it a bit better than other antihistamines.... and remember that benadryl can effect serotonin so watch out if you take it with an antidepressant it can cause come interactions.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetirizine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxyzine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diphenhydramine

I'm on 20mg. & I only notice the dry mouth once in a while, if I'm out & about & not drinking enough water. But I usually sip water throughout the day so it's not too noticeable for me.
Some things you can try: chew gum, rinse your mouth w/ one of the products made for dryness, suck on hard candies, keep well hydrated.
I would rather have some mouth dryness than go back to how my ...

hydroxyzine did make me crave sugar... but as I would take it 30 min before bed, I'd just drink some herbal tea (blueberry is my fav), then brush my teeth and go to bed.
I've heard 5 HTP helps w/ food cravings, but you want to talk to a dr or nutritionalist before taking it -I'm not a dr or anything.

I have been on Atarax (Hydroxyzene ) for 16 (sixteen) Years.
I use it for itching. It works excellent for that.
It does NOT cause ME to be Hungry or Gain Weight.
I can take up to 100 mg's 3 times daily if needed.

I noticed an improvement the first night that I took an antihistamine. That was benadryl but now I'm on Hydroxyzine (same thing as atarax). I've read studies on it and they say it takes four months to reach it's full potential, but I definitely felt a bit better after only hours. It stops the mast cells from secreting all of that bad stuff like histamines that cause inflammation.

I gained weight taking Elavil, but not with Atarax, which is similar to Vistaril. :-) Even if I did, I wouldn't give up the Atarax for anything. It literally saved my sanity and gave me my life back.

Yes, the first year I had IC I had rashes on my arms & neck. At one point, I had to take a three day dose of prednisone because the neck rash was so pronounced. If I have a bad flare in the spring, even now, I sometimes get the neck rash. All of my doctors have called it, "weird". (Which makes me want to ask for my copay back! I can call it weird all by myself.) I also developed a bunch of ...

Have you seen your doctor? If not, I think you should call today. You might have an infection working --- you really need to talk with your doctor.
