So it seems to be the case that the cost of a decent hotel in India is about the same as in Europe ie 3400 rupees which is about £50 ?

You can get decent hotel even at 600-800 INR.....this is a case of bad luck and bad hotel that overcharged. Basic hotels are available at around 400 INR.

Rohtang has one meter of snow now , and it won´t go away soon. Meanwhile you´ll be able to go up to Marhi (3300-ish), "snow point" and touch the snow until the pass is cleared , probably around mid-May. Updates here

Drove down to Shimla today from Narkanda. The road condition is pathetic coz of widening work of NH going one. Suggest traveling by a tank or will be choked of dust in a normal passenger vehicle

Mc Leod Ganj In December will be a very quite palce to be.Most locals (read Tibetians ) move down to the plains during this time. So if you are looking down teh main shopping street it will have most shops closed.
As far as the natural beauty goes it will be awesome. Temp will dip to sub zero. As for a Trek again it maybe snowing in the upper parts, but its a chance you will have to take if ...

Dear IM's,
for my new year celebration,I have decided to go to a remote Himachali destination,a village perhaps with basic accommodation(clean bed,at least Lanterns,hot water) but decent food options.(Just Non veg,coffee etc).Destination could also be a place near to a major tourist junction.

I think I have been on the top of the hill were the temple is, but I actually didn't go inside as there were this massive cew. When you climb up the steps to the temple you have to look behind you to appreciate the lenght of the cew.
You can reach the top of the hill with a cable car which has 4 seats each. The time I went in November 2007, we had to wait 1.5 hours in the cew to ...

2. Green Hotel will serve the purpose....
3. Yes ! It's safe, just take normal precautions.....
4. Shiva Cafe is near the waterfall at Bhagsu

Bus is a good way. You can prebook Govt. buses at www.hrtc.gov.in/advance.htm
Some private buses go from Majnu ka tila (Near Kashmiri Gate ISBT) also.

Two places to vist that immediately come to my mind are Chamunda Devi Temple and Baijnath Temple. You may visit Nugyal Khad near Bundelmata temple and Andretta village of famous painter sardar Sobha Singh also....
Best stay option is Taragrah Palace....
