It's not as authentic-looking, and actors like Val Kilmer like to actually make themselves look like the role they will be playing. It helps them to feel more connected to the character. It's called method acting.

I don't actually think he looks bad. He's fifty, first of all, and he looks hardly that overweight -- maybe twenty or thirty pounds. BFD. He is still a great actor and looks pretty damn good for fifty.
