Significance of Hurricane Katrina?
Published (2009-11-24 04:02:00)
It was Katrina. During one point in the movie we are shown the television on the wall with the newscasters talking about the hurricane. I can't remember if the newscasters actually say it is Katrina, but it does say so right on the television. At first I didn't really give much thought to the hurricane. I live in South Florida and talks about or preparations for a hurricane are pretty commonplace. But when I did realize that it was...

Noticing more of the little things (especially those cloying little symbols) won't help a film that is fundamentally flawed. Yes! I was just complaining about the blatantly obvious hummingbird motif on another thread!

Clock?

Benjamin Button is the clock maker's wish come true, but by the end of the film you realize aging in reverse would be just as bad, if not worse. Time will always take everything away.

Pitt gets an Oscar nom for this?

I'll have to disagree about Pitt not having enough depth. See The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, probably his finest performance of his career. A haunting performance.

Can someone tell me if Elias Koteas' Cajun accent (as mr. Gateau) was any good?

All it seemed to be was a metaphor for benjamin's life (going backwards-OBVIOUSLY), there was no real significance to him literally. Many parts of the movie were disappointing and this was one of them.

Haha, I was just on my way to IMDB to start a thread like this. Did I ever tell you I was struck by lightning 7 times? One time I was just sitting there, watching some movie called Benjamin Button. "Do you see me? Do you see? Do you like me? Do you like me standing there?"

It is not a connection explained at all in the film so you didn't miss anything. As you suggest, you can infer that in the universe of the film, the clockmaker/father's desire to turn back time for his late son somehow is transferred to the unrelated BB being born in the same city around the same time.

He made the clock to tick backwards. And that is why we saw the sequence of the clockmaker going backwards in time, remember? He said it was a symbol of his wishes that the people killed in the war, including his son, would come back.

agreed. the soundtrack is phenomenal, among cinema's greatest in fact. I purchased a copy of the cd and it's my favorite album for when i'm studying or having a restless night. It's peaceful and graceful in every way possible. Desplat is truly a great composer. His soundtrack for Birth is almost equally breathtaking (despite the movie being on a much lower level than Benjamin Button) ...

I agree completely. My final thought on it was that they should have simply gotten Roger Zemeckis to direct this one, too, it would have completed the cheese factor and probably garnered a truckload of the little brass statues. Did this thing win any, anyway? I forgot to check. http://www.drunkduck.com/2_Bitter_4_Words/ ~
