People seem to be making an assumption here for which there is little evidence. Namely, that major studios today are more willing to give a director carte blanche (as welles was by rko in 1940)to create whatever artistic vision they desire, regardless of cost. The truth is that welles' ignorance of/disdain for the business side of show business would have hindered him in any era, present one included. Furthermore, talk of internet...

Keep in mind that if Welles wasn't around being obnoxious in the 40s-60s, the modern auteur indie film movement might never have started.
Also, I'm not sure he'd be that happy with internet film distribution.
Flying is no different than riding a bicycle; it's just harder to put baseball cards in the spokes

As most Welles buffs know, before he went into movies, Orson Welles staged a heavily edited version of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" set in then-contemporary fascist Italy. It was a major hit, and went on to become the longest-running Shakespearian play of all time.
However, it was never filmed. This means there isn't really any way for buffs like me to know more about it.

After the box office failures of Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons , as well as a disasterous attempt to film a documentary in South America, Welles was fired by RKO, and his reputation suffered tremendously.
After that, he was generally seen as indulgent and flighty by studio exectives, so most of the majors would not hire him as a filmmaker.

Well, I met him and spoke with him briefly in a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles in the early 1980's (might have been earlier, not sure). He was extremely pleasant and "decent", as you say. I was somewhat stunned so didn't say much, but the woman who introduced us said I had been in some movies, so he was kind and interested. Even Touch of Evil was chopped up a bit by the studios, and Chimes at Midnight, Othello, and others were hampered by severe budget constraints.
Besides, Welles himself said that his original cut of "Ambersons" was probably much better than " Citizen Kane", and that the hour of footage the studio cut out and burned was "the heart of the film, really" (his words).

If one wanted to see "ranting and other senseless negativity", you'd need look no further than many of your comments (indeed, I found this one while 'doing my research', as you duly suggest, in reply to another grumpy know-it-all comment of yours). It's all "blah blah people these days... rich people... the government and hollywood... today's generation... blah blah you kids get off my lawn..."...
