No sympathy for Woo Jin

'-- does Oldboy pander?' I'd say there are ingredients in 'Oldboy' that Park Chan Wook and others, assuming there were others, involved in deciding what the ingredients in the film would be expected a certain type of audience to like/appreciate/expect to be in it. And they were surely put in so that the film would be appreciated. If some moron responded by saying, 'Jeeze, dude, so that sick incest stuff was put in...

If some moron responded by saying, 'Jeeze, dude, so that sick incest stuff was put in to please an audience?', You know, I bet someone has made that comment in the past. If so, I'd like to shake that brainiac's hand. You surely don't think 'Oldboy' was not in any way a commercial venture. Movies are all commercial ventures in the sense that they have to make money, but I think it's sort of folly to...

No sympathy for Woo Jin

Feeling sympathy for a character and being engaged with his/her story are two very different things. When i watch a movie i want to see interesting characters, characters with stories i want to follow. If i "like them" or not is beyond the point. In that sense, a story and it's characters should be evaluated for what they're portraying, not by using just visceral measures. Woojin is a complex and engaging character,...

When I saw this the first time I thought 'great, no way Hollywood can remake this! Without the incest and the tongue cutting it will be pointless' Seems hollywood are out to prove me wrong! Heres hoping it's another remake flop.

Note: Yes, I know the spoiler is mainly in the title. But if a person hasn't seen the film, knowing it involves a pregnancy can't hurt them. Plus, the first lesson you learn on IMDb is not to come on the boards before to watch the film. So there. Watching the film, I really assumed she (can't remember her actual name) was really pregnant. Her brother had gone through such a guilt trip after her death that he convinced himself...

He didn't say you're supposed to feel sorry because he's rich, he's saying we should feel a little sad because... But he doesn't have his sister, and worse than that he knows that he's partially complicit in the "why" of that particular statement. If we get past the wrongness of his relationship with his sister, he's just a guy who has lost someone so essential to his person that literally...

What would you have done?
Published (2009-11-06 10:20:00)
Judging by the title and by the content,I guess you are not talking about oh-dae-su,and you are just interested about what would people do in his position??? Just a particular situation ? If that's the case, then here is my answer: I would let him live temporarily to discover why he did it. Of course I can't be sure of that, but here is what I think I would do in a situation like that (my english is not that good,so please sorry for...

I believe Michael Moore already made this point... The boys in Columbine went bowling the night before the shooting.... does that mean we should ban bowling?

Yeah, this is fantastic news. Glad to hear that this is finally dead, and I hope that no one goes out of their way to try and resurrect it.

Your reason for hating the film is rather odd. Well not hating but not liking. I mean your " plot" holes are lacking. Your doesn't make sense arguments, don't make sense.
I mean he found out Mido was his daughter. What part didn't you get in that? He didn't get his revenge in the movie. Woo-Jin did. Woo-Jin told Oh Dae Su, Mido was his daughter. Why would he look for his lost daughter if he ...

Does Dae Su really has any other option other than begging for mercy? He knows, and we know, that telling Mido the truth would completely destroy her, and Dae Su obviously doesn't want that. It's a painful scene to watch, but that's the point of it.

There are SPOILERS in this reply.
I think this is one of the weaknesses in the plot of the film. Surely, kill him right away. True, Woo Jin did threaten to kill the gal Oh Dae Su loved if he failed to find out within a certain period of time why he was imprisoned, but did Oh Dae Su actually know at this point in the film that he wouldn't be able to get back to her after killing Woo Jin and ...

I always had the feeling that she was his daughter.
When they had sex, I thought... "maybe I was wrong, that just isn't right".
When I saw the whole brother, sister thing... it was obvious.
It was hard to feel suprised at the end.

You mean besides the huge one in your title?
As for the adolescent Woo Jin, he's a kid who sexually abuses the sister he has the hots for.
I'm hardly one to defend incest, but what he didn't wasn't " sexual abuse". Nothing indicated that their relationship wasn't consensual. Say what you want about their relationship, but he didn't rape her.
As...

Rather than deal with the consequences of his irrational, hedonistic choices, he decided to take it out on an innocent person.
I don't see the problem here, mainly because nothing ever indicated that the audience was supposed to agree with Woo-jin. He was clearly meant to be childish, selfish and irrational. The tragedy is that Oh Dae-su DIDN'T deserve what he got.
Were I in Dae-Su's ...

The protagonist entrusts the safety of the woman he has fallen in love with with a character who clearly was one of the last people in the world he should have trusted since the person was something of a scumbag gangster for hire with a grudge against the protagonist and who had already proved his willingness to do terrible harm to both the protagonist and his gal. Now don't mention that hand -...
