Yes. The Brown surname derives from an early 70s blaxploitation movie that starred Pam Grier as the liberated protagonist. I love this performance, and I agree that the explanation of killing Melanie is truly hilarious; but this is not the farthest he has strayed from type. The King of Comedy is one of his most odd roles in this sense. Other than that he is crazy, his outward mannerisms are essentially the exact opposite of the stereotypical De Niro character.
