What if Maximus escaped and...

It was well known throughout all of the legions that Marcus thought of Maximus as a son, and was a favored General. Maximus' legions were in Ostia, probably kept away from Rome becuase they were still a bit loyal to him. His men would rally immediately to his side. It also wasn't one legion of 5000 men. It was most likely much of the entire group that cem from the fighting in Germania. Multiple legions. Maximus would not have taken...

I felt it was one of the most tragic scenes I've ever watched. I was sad for both the father and son. Such talent. Wonderful. "a malcontent who knows how to spell"

When Joaquin did the 4 chief virtues speech to Richard Harris I was sold on him. I think Richard Harris was a better actor when he got old because he always talked in a whisper when he acted, this suited old men better than say Oliver Cromwell, so I liked him in this film. He also was brilliant at implying different things in the line "so much for the glory of Rome". Crowe was just brilliant. He sold the tough look while not...

Who's been to Rome???

Ok fair enough, I guess the emphasis is very much on The Holy Catholic Empire than the Roman Empire. I know, I know it's to be expected I'm just a more keen fan of history than religion (where the two seperate of course) but it is still a beautiful city. Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde!

seriously. how cool a movie would it have been (better in my opinion) if he actually escaped and took a huge azz 5k men army and shoved it in the kings face. Like a huge battle scene again. That to me would have been a more interesting film than another gladiator fight. They shoulda done a alternative ending

The way I figure it is they made a point of showing Marcus having a conversation with Lucilla about his plans for when he dies. He tells her about his intentions to *not* leave power with Commodus. He has a similar conversation with Maximus later on. So both of them knew that Commodus would not succeed Marcus as Caesar... Yet, when Aurelius is found dead, Maximus is summoned by his "Emperor." I would say Maximus figured...

There's some absolutly great performances, but i think Joaquin was the best of all he practically gives me goosebumbs with every look and line he gives. Richard Harris was enchanting, Oliver Reed was amazing, his last "Shadows and Dust" gets me everytime *goosebumbs* even though that is edited very sloppy i must say. Conie Nielson was terrific. And Russel Crowe was good, he had really good moments but he's just...

Stupid.
That would be boring. Yay, everyone lives happily every after, Russel and Connie kissing in the sunset while Lucius says "I love you spaniord".
Screw that, I want an epic ending, just as it is now. Perfect.

For me, his was the most compelling performance. I have seen the film so many times that, now, I just zoom to any scenes with Joaquin Phoenix in them.
I also think Richard Harris was superb.

Commodus was a product of his parents' neglect. He was a disappointment to his father, for whatever reason. His father rejected him. I agree...He more tragic than despicable. What he does is despicable.
Joaquin Phoenix portrayed Commudus a multidimentional. Wounded and wounding.
It was a phenomenal performance.

I went to the Colosseum after seeing the movie and it seemed much smaller to me. Isn't it missing the top tier shown in the movie? And it didn't look to me as if the "floor" could have been as big as in the movie - although it's hard to tell as it isn't there anymore (iykwim).

Five thousand of my men are out there in the freezing mud. Three thousand of them are bloodied and cleaved, two thousand will never leave this place. It's not actually said how many were killed but we know that he has at least 5000 left so I can't imagine he lost half already in the battle. To be honest I didn't notice that so many Romans died myself but I could be wrong.

That'd be awesome. An hour long alternate ending.
