His best five films?
Published (2009-11-23 15:58:00)
Well, this is a problem that I actually encounter watching Hitchock films more than once and that is many times unless I forgot the plot, the suspense factor is gone. By no means am I trying to denigrate his work and he definitely is my favorite, but when you know something is going to happen next, you react differently to the movie. When I watch a Hitchcock film, I might watch it, then put it away for months, so when I come back to it, all...

That's a very reasonable answer. What I would be interested in knowing since you mentioned that "you don't know what will happen next" is, has the film held up for you on second and third viewings since you now DO know what happens next? There's still Milland's performance to enjoy, I suppose. I just felt like I was watching a play--a good captivating one, but a play not a piece of cinema. >: 4 8 15...

Hitchcock was overrated
Published (2009-11-19 17:31:00)
"As far as being an artist with anything of real importance to say about the world and human experience, Hitchcock is, I feel, indeed over-rated by some. " And Hitchcock would probably agree with you. Hitch did not make films that were based on a "Slice of Life"- he would say that is boring and dull, who wants to watch something that happens in everyday life?

His best five films?
Published (2009-11-20 08:40:00)
1. The Birds 2. Psycho 3. Dial M for Murder 4. Marnie 5. North by Northwest Haven't seen Rebecca yet, and I can't properly remember Rear Window and Vertigo. But I know that I wasn't too fascinated when I saw them; in fact, I think I was slightly annoyed for some reason. I guess I will have to watch them again.

I wasn't crazy about Family Plot Marnie I Confess The Trouble With Harry Torn Curtain I haven't seen his earlier works in years. I am going to have to look at them again. Jamaica Inn was not so bad ,nor was Murder. But I haven't seen the other three in years and other then their names I don't remember them. So give me a few weeks and I might agree with you. The ones I mentioned were ok ...

I'm not overly fond of either of The Paradine Case or Under Capricorn, but both are worth seeing. The Paradine Case was a troubled production. After Paradine, some of the key talent working for Selznick moved on to MGM and Warner Brothers. The visuals created for Hindley Hall are quite remarkable however, particularly when one begins to realize how much of those scenes are the work of matte...
