Why did Tom Cruise's...

Yes, because the picture was over budget and behind schedule, and the cockup with the explosions had just made the press. And also because he's always pissed about something, because he loves to rant and rave. * * * FedEx just took NINE days to send me an "overnight" package. * * *

I take it he was pissed off at the director?

Do women really love it?

Nobody was saying that female culture doesn't have it's silly aspects. That's not the point here. The point is, this film makes fun of some macho culture tropes, and therefore some women will find it funny and easy to laugh with. Obviously, a lot of men have a sense of humor about it as well. Movies don't create psychos, movies make psychos more creative.

The 'Chinese'...

As a native Chinese speaker myself, I thought RDJ's mandarin was one of the funniest moments of the whole movie. The nonsense that he was speaking was hysterical!

Brandon Soo Hoo nailed it!

That bizarre combination of cute on the one hand, and frighteningly evil and intimidating on the other, was just hilarious. That kid obviously knows how to act. Bet you he knows how to make people laugh too. I think he might be my new hero.

Correct me if i'm wrong but, was Simple Jack in reference to John Malkovich's portrayal of Lenny in Mice of Men?

could definitely have been an in joke. I think the OP and all native speakers of Chinese dialects should realise just what they're asking here, this isn't a movie made for native chinese speakers, and as a result the other languages spoke in the movie are simply "placeholder" to give you an idea of what's going on. It doesn't need to be accurate. if all actors spent weeks learning how to do this stuff...

I'm a woman in my 40s and thought it was hilarious too. Not sure I can shed light on why either. But I found it very clever and its willingess to "cross the line" and skewer about every group you can think of, to be very refreshing. And Robert Downey Jr made the movie for me.

Yes, his performance was one of my favorite things about the movie! He managed to be quite genuinely intimidating, which is a great achievement from a child actor. You can see he has talent; He was fantastic. And so frigging badass, too!

Because he couldn't do the punching himself, being 10,000 miles away.
It was also a demonstration of his power; proving that he could make "his" people do illegal and immoral things, and showing that in a conflict between the producer and director, the crew would side with the man who signed the paychecks.
Any other questions?

Well, I would think that the film makers assume that a very small portion of the viewers will actually know Chinese, everyone else as long as they make it sound good, they won't know the difference anyways. This way, all the actors and everyone wouldn't need to take classes or whatever to learn the real dialects and all that.
However, I assume you know Chinese, so is RDJ even saying real ...

Also a reference to Sean Penn in "I Am Sam", and Cuba Gooding in "Radio". And all the oscar-grabbing roles where an actor plays someone with a mental or physical handicap, I can't list them all now. Or ever.
