IVM modification of vlans

You will have the same issue. You cannot add, remove, or modify VLANs on a virtual Ethernet adapter without removing the adapter and recreating it. Steve

One VLAN on different VIOs
Published (2009-12-15 10:34:00)
Why are you using the 'mkvdev -vlan' command? Do you really need an IP address on the VIOS configured on that VLAN? There is typically no need to create the vlan ent adapter on the VIOS unless you need the VIOS to have an IP address configured on said VLAN and tagging packets on that VLAN. Most configurations do not need this. Remember, it's possible to have the VIOS bridge ethernet using SEA without even configuring any IP...

Yes, you can back up the virtual device information, and yes, you can do it while the clients are running. Take a look at: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/index.jsp?topic=/iphb1/iphb1backupvirtdevs.htm. Or you can do a google search for "backupios command".

110%, 80%, and CPU threshold...
Published (2009-12-10 15:49:00)
I pretty much understand what allows an LPAR to get additional VCPUs (that is the 80% threshold of demanded CPUu's compared to it's VCPU's full capability). I also understand what allows a pool to tap on UtilityCoD CPU's (when the aggregate CPUu demand of the pool's LPARs is 110% of the physical CPUs assigned to that pool). yes I think you understand the question: Assuming that the pool has unused CPUu's...

API to manage VIO Servers...
Published (2009-12-14 13:45:00)
Thanks George. Is SNMP a good option to manage the VIO clients. Any ideas where the OID's for the various system properties can be found. Is there any good documentation around?? Thanks in advance for your help.

One VLAN on different VIOs
Published (2009-12-15 05:15:00)
Thanks for your help. But I wrote an incomplete question. I have multiple VLANs on my VIOs. For example: VIO A: VLANs 223 225 332 & 333 VIO B: VLANs 223 224 & 333 Each VIO network should be defined to have multiple VLAN and use "mkvdev -vlan ent5 -tagid 223" for each VLAN In this case, the VLAN number must be the same inside and outside the P5. HMC profil and switch conf VLANs numbers must be the same no ? If I put for...

PowerVM vs VMware security
Published (2009-12-08 14:47:00)
Can you find out what security concerns they are trying to combat? Security should be a balance between usability and security, i.e. if I make something so secure that it cannot be used to perform the desired task then it is useless! Both products will have strengths and weaknesses, the key here is to make sure that you have compensating controls in place where the concerns are. What operating system do you run on VMWARE? What are your...

Online Virtual CPUs > CPU...
Published (2009-12-09 11:04:00)
I am a capacity planner and I came across a LPAR configuration where the "Online Virtual CPUs" is greater than the "Active CPUs in Pool". I cannot think of any advantage to doing this. In fact, my thought is that it may be a disadvantage in the sense that the Power HyPervisor is doing unnecessary work. Abreviated "lparstat -i" output: Partition Number : 3 Type : Shared-SMT Mode : Uncapped Entitled Capacity : 7.00...

While it is possible to have a VIOS without a configured IP address and have it happily serve Virtual SCSI (and bridge layer 2 Ethernet), it's not possible to manage this VIOS from any external entity - including the HMC. When you have no IP configured on the VIOS, you're only management option is to open up the TTY Console from the HMC (mkvterm) and issue the ioscli commands as ...

You can use DLPAR, yes. However, there will be a network outage for the other client partitions. You cannot simply add another VLAN to an existing adapter. You must dynamically remove the adapter, then dynamically add the adapter with the all of the old VLANs and the new VLAN. Steve

Yes, the partition configuration is stored in NVRAM with the firmware. The only way to clear all of the partition configuration is to clear the blade's NVRAM (which can be done from AMM or from IVM). Steve

It is not sure this will help, I may only be repeating what you already know but I will give it a shot. If you have a LPAR with an entitlement of 4.0 shared CPUs and it is uncapped it will only use what it needs. If the workload is low, it may only be using 1.0 CPUs even though it is entitled to 4.0 CPUs. The lparstat command is one way to show how many physical CPUs are used. As the...

Yes you can run backupios with live client partitions. Otherwise it wouldn't be very useful. All the info you need is on IBM website. Start with this Redbook. http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg24759 0.pdf

The only reasons I can think of to do that would be: 1) Basic qualification of your app for more CPUs than you physically have. This isn't the same as doing it on real physical CPUs, but might do in a pinch. 2) Partition mobility: you are moving the partition to or from a system with more physical CPUs. Steve
