Rear axle to firebird with chevy...

All of the early Firebirds used the same rear end, with a 6 cylinder or a ram air 400. This rear end can be built strong enough to handle your engine with the type of driving that you want to do. I recommend a new Eaton Posi and a good installation kit with Timken bearings and the super shim set. As for the gear ratio, a 3.36 will be good if you drive on the highway. If you only stay in town then a 3.73 would be all right, but the RPMs are...

low rev race to high problem
Published (2009-11-27 21:01:00)
hmmmm, the Sessions book should indicate that the race in the center support engages onto the planetary unit... if the race is not properly engaged , the race sits high and nothing is correct above it.

PS. although I doubt it,is it supposed to pull into place?
Scrap that. From reading I know its not supposed to. Like I said though I just dont get how every height comes to exactly where its supposed to except this final inner race. Every wear point, every snap ring (Inner and outer) EVERYTHING. So its not a tear down. Its some how in how this inner race is sitting I just cant figure out ...

Which 10 bolt is it? The 8.5 10 bolt is a good rear end and worth a rebuild. If it's the 8.2 or 7.5 then you might want to think about getting a better rear end to invest in.
An installation kit is the best way to go when rebuilding a rear end. It will come with all of the bearings, crush spacer, pinion nut, shims, gasket, seal and other parts needed for the rebuild. You will also want a ...

Yes, the '96 Caprice rear will bolt right up to the car, but might require a shorter driveshaft if your car now has a 7.5" 10-bolt, the '96 rear is an 8.5" and the pinion nose is a little longer. If your car has an 8.5" already then the driveshaft is fine and everything bolts up. The TH-350 uses the least amount of power internally of the three, about 10(+ or-) less than the other two. It is ...

The gov lock unit is not a performance unit..... beyond a bone stock application the gov lock will spit parts out the cover if you hit it with much power very often.

You are supposed to put it in(D-for Drive) and it shoul shift through the gears on it's own when you reach certain rpm's or a certain speed.

Get a set of Moser housing ends that take the 9 inch Ford press on axle bearings. Use them and a set of Moser axles and everything will work fine. Moser will make the axles to fit the Dana splines and the Ford bearngs. You will also have the Chevy bolt pattern. I've narrowed hundreds of rear ends and the Moser parts are good quality. Get the 7900 housing ends and you can even use Chevy drum ...
