Soldering Flux?
Published (2009-12-12 23:47:48)
I've been using the same flux for just about everything for 20 years. There must be something new and improved by now. What are your favorites? And for which applications?

Soldering Flux?

Silver solder can be a pain in the neck if you don't have enough heat. I use a Hakko iron made for stained glass use, 1100 degrees, and it does a good job. A jewelers torch would be better, as far as flowing it on. The only problem with the jewelers torch is having to buy the tanks of oxygen. They can use a lot of different gases depending on what temperature you want. Somehow or another I just don't think the wife would go for me...

Soldering Flux?

One other thing I picked up many burned fingers ago was this. Use A LOT of heat, A LOT of flux, and not so much solder. It's easier to add a little more solder to a joint than to clean it off later. I always use 60/40 rosin core, the stuff that is about 1/16 inch diameter, and only about three bucks for a small roll, and flows great. I could never get silver solder to flow right, and although the joint is really shinny, the silver solder...

That was really a feat, putting together a 2.75 mile long Scalextric track... My favorite part of the video was right at the end, with the Napier-Railton. I remember pictures of that car from when I was a kid, in a book dad gave us. Beautiful car!

Good luck with that, I'm sure a 4X4 expert can point you in the right direction. I was really disapointed when I learned(nearly too late) that my JEEP was
really just 1 front and 1 rear wheel drive. My VW Vanagon Syncro can lock the rear right to left and I can put a kit in to lock the front to rear with only the
front being left open.......too bad we don't get any snow :(

I've not seen much of a change since I started building stuff back in the 60's. I tend to use the paste type for electrical stuff like soldering lead
wires and the like, because it is easier to clean off and not as corrosive. And the Sta-Brite, or Uncle Bobs for all the chassis stuff. If I am soldering
stainless steel around axles and ball bearings or other parts of a steel frame I have a little ...

If I attempted to move the " old faithful" Char-Griller...it would fall apart and I would need to rent a new spleen. But I promise the food will be ok
We have heat down here...especially after some hot wings!
This is great!
