I agree that the most important part of this article is the young man's inspirational story and academic success. But to ask or question if he is here legally is not "bashing" or "racist" but an important detail that readers need to know (e.g., is he LPR, student visa, refugee, green card etc.). After all, So Cal has been the center of illegal immigration for decades.
