Ok, thanks for the info. I guess I don't understand why I can't activate the card they gave me with the receiver. I also have the card from the now-dead TiVo but I guess that will be the same story since all of my equipment is ancient. I have not called to cancel or modify my service at all yet, even since the Tivo died. I just want TV without extending my contract. well here is my updated. He had to replace my Multiswitch outside, Replaced the LNB. He had to run 1 new line because he couldnt fine the splice that was causing all my HD channels to not come in. everything is working fine now.

If you login to your D* online account and look at the new HDDVR receivers you will find and option to add ota using the usb connection. Then your HD receiver will show the OTA channels in your D* guide and then you will be able to record them. Contact a D* CSR for more info.

Actually, the Protection Plan replaces OWNED with OWNED and without a new agreement, THAT is what you are largely paying for. I've had it since I signed up with D*, had two units replaced and neither of them came with new agreements. All you need is a good HDTV and a DirecTV HD DVR. The DirecTV DVRs are good in my experience, and they are capable of delivering full 1080P pictures with Dolby Digital audio. You have it backwards, you should be able to "see" media from the HR21 in Windows 7 not the other way around.

usually with hd channels, there is a lag. Coworkers have said that directv tends to have lag whereas dish network there is no lag. I just accept the lag and it's not really a problem for me...

what problems?? I signed up not too long ago when directv was offering free installation and a free upgrade to a dvr or hd dvr when signing up online which was about a couple of months ago

Yes you can. All outputs are turned on. So you can hook up several TV's to the same DVR and yes, they would be displaying the same program on all of them at the same time.
