Contrast MRI
Published (2009-11-13 09:39:00)
Hi all I was just wondering... The one spine surgeon I saw did MRIs without contrast only and I asked another (neurologist) about getting a contrast MRI as I have heard and read that they may show things that plain MRI does not and he said he would not do a contrast MRI. Is there any reasons why they have not bothered doing a contrast MRI? Why are contrast MRIs offered if doctors do not bother ordering them? Just was wondering. Many thanks for...

Keep in mind that neurosugeons and orthopedic spine surgeons also work with non-surgical treatments. Once my neurologist found there to be cervical problems he immediately referred me to a neurosurgeon so I could get more information on all treatment options.

One surgery leads to another.......
Published (2009-11-11 23:33:00)
Thanks everyone for your replies. Luckily my surgeon had a cancelation and I get to see him Dec 1st. I got my test results back. L4-L5 is compressing my nerve, and L3-L4 and L2-L3 have tears but otherwise look normal. L3-L4 caused 5/10 pain however on the discogram. For the last couple of days I have noticed incredible weakness in my legs. It is too much work to walk up the stairs and sometimes just to hold myself up. I am worried about it....

Hi Neckpatient...great job on the spine board...but....I guess your spine docs and mine disagree because my neurosurgeon does not operate for pain...period. I did talk to a doc in NYC who considered operating for pain in my lumbar spine but the Boston doc said no way. I'd create more problems that I solved. So I guess I should tell folks that SOME docs won't operate for pain. But I can see my doc's point. Pain can be treated and...

It is good to hear from you again,I enjoy that. It could be said that it is true that peoples of different nations could discuss and debate issues of importance, with no constraints of time and politics. I suppose that this type of forum is just too simple for the higher powers to use, pathetic. What is really amazing is that we as a whole just fail to realize all of these issues simply because of being distracted by the simple act of just...

I am living with a nonfused SI joint....my Dr. said at first that the nuts/bolts/screws etc. were made to hold everything in place until you fused....roughly several months...after that they can do stuff....or back out. Now that really scares me.... How could that strong of a metal break??? well, I guess it could if that is all that is holding you together, ya think???? I hope that all of my ...

Hi,
Be sure to see "Post Surgery Tips" which is at the very top of this topic (a "Sticky"). It's easy to miss.
I had a microdiscectomy. You will be encouraged to walk pretty much right from the first day. Not a mile but just around the house a little. It may hurt quite a bit to get up and lie down. Pain meds are usual although some people somehow can get away with not taking them. It all ...

I would much appreciate a bit of advice on this if anyone has actually had a similar experience or suffers with the same thing. I feel really alone right now and it seems no one has any ideas...or wants to hide them from me...I cannot trust anybody.

I recently consulted with an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon about possibility of removal of the hardware. My hardware was installed in 1993 and is HUGE by today's standards. He said my symptoms may actually be at the level above the fusion (so at the L3-L4 level). From what the surgeon said removal of hardware for pain relief is totally " hit or miss" unless you can see on MRI/CT that there is ...

Moon,
My fusion failed as well and I also recieved a you are all fused from my original surgeon and several , you aren't fused at alls' at the others I consulted for second, third and fourth opinions as to why I was in worse shape than I was before the surgery.
I had to have it revised and the neuro used bmp to try to make sure that it did in fact fuse.
As to why that other group removed ...

but how is the sciatica today? They say to take a little caffiene if you have a headache since they don't want you to take an anti-inflammatory for a couple days after the injection. Hang in there for another day and try not to get the injection site angrier at you!

Huh? Is this your first one?
I just had one 2.5 weeks ago and the SOONEST my Dr. would sch. another was the end of December. I have had many of them in the past 5 years and never in that short of a time span. My recovery from this last one was 4 days of post-procedure pain and it can take up to a week for the meds to even take effect.
Ask him if he's certain on that time frame.

Sage I am so sorry that you are having to go through another surgery. You have been through so much. Do you know your surgery date yet? I just want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you now, during your surgery and during your recovery.

It would be a good idea to read the stickies at the top of the board. They will give you a good idea of what he and your mom will need to do. It's not a walk in the park by any means. It will be a difficult heal, and it does hurt. I don't know if he is having a 360 or not (open from both sides). The first day after when they get him up-he will wonder what in the world inspired him to do this, ...

I have not had any lumbar surgery done exactly for the reason you are talking about...one surgery leads to another. My neurosurgeon figures of he starts, he'll end up going right up my spine to meet the fusion in my neck.
But I have had 2 major cervical spine surgeries, 3 months apart. I have a 6 level fusion. It's tough...I understand. The best advice I can give you is to see the finest ...

The recommended starting dose of Lyrica for controlling partial seizures in people with epilepsy is Lyrica 75 mg, taken twice daily, or Lyrica 50 mg, taken three times daily. If necessary to control your seizures, your healthcare provider may increase your dose, up to a maximum of Lyrica 200 mg, taken three times daily. Thanks!

You may need surgery at some point but try the physio first to see if it helps. But if you develop any problems with bladder function(can't go or going suddenly when you don't want to) or bowel function(can't go or can't stop) call your doctor immediately. That needs immediate surgery.
Surgery is a permanent fix and may not relive your pain and may actually cause more pain so it is always a ...
