You are in about the same situation I am in Jojo with Mom and Dad's finances. Mom has LTD insurance but Dad does not. Dad has a state retirement and military retirement, both of which have 100% survivor rights for Mom so even if he dies she will get 100% of both. Mom was a wiz in the stock market and managed to create an above average portfolio. So their income and holdings opt them out of Medicaid coverage but it may take just about...

Oh Pauline... Truly the words of experience. You have looked back and you know you were a wonderful daughter to your wonderful mom. Your words are what we will need when it is our time. Thank you. Love, Meg

I called my Mom yesterday morning, a little reluctantly, but she was so happy to hear from me. Made me feel ok about calling her. Anyway, we made plans to go make a christmas list of possible presents for the kids. We brought my 2 kids. I didn't have the heart to tell Mom that right now she doesn't have the money for Christmas. I told the kids we are not buying anything today. We had a very nice time with Mom. She did repeat herself...

Confronting her would not help, she is not able to think clearly and make smart decisions. It probably shocks you, but eventually we all bcome wonderful at little white lies and deceptions. Remember, you are not making up stories to harm or cheat your Mom but to help her. That huge amount of money she is carrying around can so easily be stolen, or some sharp crook can convince her to give it to him as a wonderful investment. Use some of the...

Deb, you are a rock! I will call the nursing home my mom likes. She has volunteered there since my grandmother was a resident, over 20 years ago, and everyone knows her and she feels confident she'll get good care there. I need to find out the cost, and put them on a waiting list. Even if I hope it won't be necessary, you all make a good point - I should be better prepared for this possibility than I am. I don't think either one...

I never quite understood when I used to hear people say to others well, its a blessing they are no longer in any pain. I used to think how can one say that?? They just lost a loved one. Not until the past week or so do I feel I really do understand the meaning of those words and how true they are in my mom's case. My mom suffered an awful lot the past year. Mostly from being a dialysis patient, BUT she fought it all the way.... She always...

Deb, I do get it!! If we put a freeze on her credit cards she'll be asking how did you get my numbers and that I am sneeky. We do have POA but like I said before, we cannot make her do anything she doesn't want to do. I am getting so upset with all of this and it is taking a toll on my life too. She fights us on "everything". All she wants to do is to move back to Ontario and get as far away from my husband and me...

the removal of excess cloths is a must... it is not easy but little by little I have taken bag fulls of clothing to the thrift store, probably where it came from in the first place...now I put the cloths out for my mom on top of her dresser where it is easy to see, and all her sweats, top and bottoms, each time I visit they all must be scrutinized to make sure there are no stains, I have a bunch of extra ones, same color and replace the ones...

Deb Maybe so its not so overwhelming as things get worse, is it possible that Sister #2 who is such terrific help to you with them could be responsible for one parent and you the other? Especially on days like this where you are called out and then called out again once you are home and think everything is now ok. When its divided up -- as things get worse -- it may not be so ...

The clue of developing issues with my Mom was when she would not change her clothes. Is your Mom on any new meds that could be causing her to hold water? It's possible dress shoes (or solid shoes) have gotten to tight for her. As long as her appearance is matched and clean and appropriate for the temperatures (not necessarily in the fashion season sense but in the safe sense) I wouldn't give ...

Meg it sounds as though your mother is a lot worse then my mother-in-law. mine is living with us and her husband who is a disabled vet (in wheelchair) and we think he might be starting in dem. Sounds like both you and your mom are hurting. Try to imagine what it feels like to have one of your children telling you what you can and cannot do especially when the advice isn't welcomed, it's got to hurt so while I understand what it's like to be going through this, try to understand your mom needs time to adjust and realize that she cannot do what she use to do. She needs time to accept ...

If they're in a facility - as the people there, they're full of ideas if the person is female and home and early to mid stage - a gift certificate to get their hair and nails done is great if they can still be taken out. If they are housebond, you may be able to ask a local beauty shop if they come to the home and would possibly do it there. if the person is male and can go out -- a ...

Hi, Jeanniel! Welcome to our little family! Yes, you are quite right - if you've been through this, you do understand. If you have been reading about what we all do and where we are in our journeys with our loved ones, you know that I lost my dad to end-stage dementia not quite 3 months ago. I totally "get" the promise to never send them to a NH. I made the same promise. Through...

I am pretty sure that the hospital will put him on drugs to calm him, and then the geriatric psych unit WILL accept him. Then after a time of evaluation, he may be transferred to a locked Alzheimer unit. Your mother needs to have her life back. She cannot be expected to take him back again; he is a very very sick man and only professionals can help him. Good luck. Love, Martha
