When the good bacteria isn't present, then we can't digest our food completely and the immune system cuts in. This would also explain why people with UC also have trouble digesting their food. I think the above is the case for...

Ooooh, Judy, I have a heavenly peanut butter fudge recipe as well. I'm making it, and chocolate fudge (again, a killer recipe) with one of my coworkers to take in to work. I like the chocolate, but the peanut butter is absolutely my favorite! I know I can't make it and keep it all here at home or I'd have hips wider than my doorways! I also might make a white chocolate party mix, where you coat chex cereal, cheerios, pretzels,...

He claims the "animal products" (dairy) made her sick. I don't believe this at all. If that were the case, there would be many many more people with IBD then there are. I'm more inclined to believe that the whole...

Pros and cons of steroids
Published (2009-12-06 13:17:00)
None of us should take steroids - prednisone in my case - lightly. We should research and ask about all the other options. I already knew about prednisone when my gastro doctor prescribed it. I had problems with a dog that took it and my husband has taken it for COPD a couple times. I knew what I might be getting into. For almost 18 months I had bleeding, diarrhea, cramping, left-sided pain, 2...

I understand all that. It's going to attack our colon regardless. Why would putting normal bacteria in there cause it to attack it more and initiate a strong enough immune response to alleviate symptoms? Seems no one with their UC kept in check should take a probiotic if that were the case. Would just cause them to flare, which doesn't seem to be the case for most of us. The diarrhea and gas wouldn't necessarily be an immune...

Hey man, vegetables are good. I like broccoli and asparagus. Also, yeah, that's a really strange diet... I'd also exercise, cut down carbs and things with a lot of sugar (like pop). I also do well on junk food, it's prolly the preservatives or something. I'd prolly also stick with the probiotics to be on the safe side. Eat a good breakfast (I eat rice krispies, activia, and a glass or orange or apple juice). Soup makes a...

This must be where the big brains at the CCFA scoute for fundraising ideas! A Poopathon is so much better than the contest they advertised recently where the prize was a year's supply of toilet paper. I think it was three seconds before they issued a very sincere appology.

Remicade question
Published (2009-12-06 18:39:00)
The joint pains are almost certainly from weaning off the Prednisone. 100 mg. a day is an astronomical amount; most of us never take more than 40 to 60. The muscle cramps may be from a potassium deficiency, as this is common also with Pred. So the most likely culprit is the Prednisone. It can take time, in some cases up to a year, for the arthritis-like pain to go completely away; the muscle cramps can often be alleviated by eating a couple...

I don't see it causing an immune response but rather feeding what's there something to go after besides the good tissue cells (I'm no biologist so I realize I'm using non-technical terms). Remicade attaches something to the immune system's cells in order to "block" them from being able to attack to the colon's cells (dor lack of a better word), imuran and steroids work to reduce...

Scarlet, I understand your frustration.....been there. I have suffered with ulcerative proctitis for over eleven years. Been on prednisone more times than I can count and was becoming prednisone dependent. It gave me osteoporosis, high blood pressure and this past year...high glucose levels. The 6MP just wasn't doing the job.
I threw in the towel and finally listened to my GI...

That's great! I've heard from people on here that they have c-scopes come back wtih no signs of UC. I'd like to have one (if it didn't involve the prep!) just to see what's going on up there, because I feel SO great! I think you realize this, but just to make sure, you do realize that it's not completely gone, and you'll probably have a flare-up again at some point, right? I just don't want ...

I haven't heard of it but we're prone to everything else so why not... My dad doesn't have this and gets them all the time, once he had one like the size of a pea. Ouch. Make sure you drink enough water!

I don't think there'd be any harm in going back to every night for a while... You are in a hurry to get off them? I started them on 9/8 and my doc thinks I shouldn't taper until after the New Year dur to the amount of stress, both physical and emotional, I'm going through at the moment - and then he says not to be in a hurry, there's no problem being on them.

Well that is interesting! And the surgeon who did my colonoscopy said something similar to your old GI...just b/c you have UC, don't blame every little stomach upset on the disease...sometimes people just have upset stomachs! And that is hard to remember at times!

The only way to know if you have UC or C diff is to see a doctor and have the appropriate tests done. Your diet sounds kind of odd...any specific reason that's all you're eating?

Dr. A: How is this working for you now, what medications are you on (were you on), were you flaring badly??? You didn't use antibiotics so you were not concerned about having to clean out your "bad" bacteria, as Dr. Borody suggests? subdued: I see now that you posted FT put you into remission another time for two years. What medications were you on and how bad was your flare that you wanted ...

Sorry but the entire colon and rectum have to go or the disease will return to the remaining parts. You don't need to opt for jpouch surgery, you can get a permanent ileo or a k-pouch. Hopefully you won't have to make the choice but it's good to know your options. My UC was primarily limited to my rectum but the entire colon had to go too. Good thing too as the disease would have come back....

I know I would do the surgery....there is a huge comfort regarding other members experiences who have had it done, I would possibly try some of the immunomodulators, but looking at the long-term, surgery would probably be the best bet for me. The adjustment of dealing with it would be difficult, I know, but again...I think the support would help beyond. quincy

Did my second one with my little boy. I initially did him back in the early part of this year several times. Really no big difference. Still didn't notice as much difference as I did with the wife. I did notice my poo smelled like his for two days following, so there was some change in bacteria. Will go with the wifes again next. Not as much extra gas with using his. How much poo per ...

what meds are you taking? Since last Thurs I've been on 80 mg prednisone. Right now I have to focus my breathing because my heart feels like it's going to beat out of control. I get night sweats, I shake, I get frustrasted easily, quick to anger and quick to get sad, my wife said my skin is thinning, I sleep 2-3 hours/day, I feel fair for 2-4 hours then seem to crash and feel awful for 8-10 ...

I have another question and I thought I would just add it here rather than make a new post. Is weight a factor with UC? I see lots of posts about weight loss (I take it that is due to the constant trips to the restroom) but I can't find out if being overweight could hinder my healing. I don't think it helps but if I could for sure find out that it hurts me then I think I could just push ...
