USB problems with D10

incorrect, but optical is almost always (almost) superior to USB with any of the PCM2707 type receivers and they are limited to 48khz, where optical will do 96khz. its not a matter of USB being not good; its a matter of optical being better. assumptions like that will get you nowhere in audio

Yes, we do have a for sale forum Joking aside, you do need to look at the big picture. First you have to be sure your music already have decent quality to it, then you want to know whether both your source and headphone will be benefit form amping or not (and 'how much should be counted as beneficial' is mostly a judgment call). If it doesn't end up the way you want it to, on go the for sale forum to recover some money and...

Battery life on your amp ?

Rumor has it that the Tomahawk can get over 400 hours on two AAA batteries. I'm a bit skeptical.

I don't think you will get any comparisons for a while as linearossa W3 has just been announced and so far no one has heard it afaik, hence no review or comment about it in head-fi.
it does look awfully similar to D10 from the outside in the photos.. suspiciously so...hmm

I think you just gave a major reason for a portable amp....reduce noise.
I does seem me that using a LOD cable would always have the most benefit as you are now removing the internal amp from the equation. Apming from the head out only amps what is already being amped.

The fiio E7 looks very sexy! I really consider buying E7 to replace my E5 once it's on the market! And the price is as always very realistic!
Edit: Are there any specifications yet (on both)?

are you looking for a dac also? and what will be your source for me the D10 was great since it was an amp/dac and had optical to go with my iRiver.

The most outstanding amps for battery life that own are the Microshar amps. the u107 has a ridiculous battery life. Their website boasts 250 hours, but I didn't believe them until I used it. I don't use the amp much any more, but when I did, I would go a month between charges, crazy.
Conversely, out of interest, I bought the Microshar u109 amp. You would never know that the same company ...

I take it you didn't like Jerry Harvey's recommendation for the best portable amp for the JH13 ? I like what I have read about the Rx, but I cant comment further until I've heard it.

At least you know that portable amps won't do the job. But anything is an improvement over your Realtek sound card (it's bad).
The D4 is much better than the bithead.

I made a mistake and posted in the portable source section. That thread will be allowed to die and this take its place. In any case, review expected completion in less than 10 hours.

Start from the beginning. What's your source? Is a portable amp a requirement? If not, why will you be using it with full sized cans. What type of sound signature are you looking for?
Absent that, I think you should get a used Stax rig and skip the portable amp business.
