If you can afford the D7000's, I'd go with those. There seems to be a lot of work that can potentially be put into a pair of D5000's to tame the bass and reveal the mid's (via markl mod's, etc.). The D7000's, as best I recall from reading here, don't require that sort of costly tweaking to sound plenty resplendent. I had the same sort of decision to make between the D2000/D5000 and went for the former due to...

If I were going to enclose a pair of phones, I'd look for some that had a lot of damping to deaden the resonance of the enclosed chamber. I'd also play with the crappy EQ on my iPod. Closed cans tend to have a lot of bass and a fairly dark presentation. With the Acoustics and Treble Booster positions, a dark can approximate some of the pop and sparkle of an open can. If I had a pair of bass-heavy, muddy Bose OEs, I'd probably do...

They are great headphones for the price, but VERY limited as far as what genres of music they perform well with due to the limited bass. Also, PortaPros are $50, and definitely worth more than that SQ wise, so I wouldn't have expected to see much difference between those and the AD700s outside of soundstage. If you like jazz, classical and acoustic music, they are fantastic cans, but there are much better options if you prefer rock or...

Hey I'm highly considering picking up a pair of these but I have to ask how they do with rock - more specifically post rock/post metal/sludge/downtempo kind of stuff. I've heard that these do well with "rock" Is the lack of mids going to be a problem?

The middle band has a piece of metal that can be loosened. Don't bend the other two sections though, they are hard plastic.

Are you saying the Grado's aren't as good as the HD 595? Or vice versa?

Welcome to head-fi. I think you would be best served by purchasing an extension cable. I purchased mine on ebay from heels-6. He mades good quality custom cables to order at a fair price. I don't think you'd be happy with wireless headphones.

I recently purchased a set of the AD700s myself. While they do have a very good soundstage and are extremely comfortable, they don't stand out to me either. I mean don't get me wrong, they sound fantastic for the money, but I never expected them to sound much better than they do, just based on their cost. It could be a matter of your source also. The Sansa is a good DAP no doubt, but you will...

I am sorry, I do not remember the exact model number because the last time I had them was 2006. At that time, I had a set of wired Sennheiser over the ear headphones that were about $140. (if that helps you remember the exact model). I looked at the current model line, and what I had was very similar to the 595s.

If you hate supra-aurals, you have to eliminate the Grados. If you hate them because you value comfort, you will like the HD 595 on that score, since they are highly comfortable. They are indeed forward-sounding, and somewhat Grado-ish in that way. I don't listen to much metal, but I would still buy the HD 595 if I did. $160 seems like a fair price, so I say go for it, especially if that's from ...

THERE'S NOT MUCH YOU CAN GET FOR $80. YOU'RE PROBABLY LOOKING AT SOME REFURBRISHED DENON D1001S OR SENNHEISER HD280S. STRETCH YOUR BUDGET BY $15 AND YOU CAN GET THE AUDIO TECHNICA ATH-M50S. THEY SOUND GOOD WITHOUT AN AMP @ ONLY 38OHMS.

For monitoring I'd highly recommend the AKG 240s's... they are very flat sounding with no coloring so what you hear is what you get. Great for mixing and mastering, not so much for outside of the studio. You can get them for ~$100 but the MKIIs, which I have not heard, might be just as good.

Reading the beyer press release and looking at the photo, I don't believe the T1 driver is a ring radiator like in the HD800.

About 65-70dB.
Neat little Ultimate Ears app on the iPhone, similar to the 'Decibel' one but this is free.

Too bad you don't like them, I love mine. If you are not amping them, you are not doing yourself or your D2000's any favors. I don't think they are overpowering bass-wise, amped or otherwise. I do think that the bass is full, or rich - but, certainly not overpowering in my estimation.

They are affording more of an effortless quality to them now, the contrast of dynamic swings are handled better than with first turn-on.
And that's to be expected with more run-in. I swapped to the LaRocco dual mono a few moments ago. Just to let them set and simmer.
Detail without a peaky, or strident character is what I noticed most toward the end of the last listen. The LaRocco ...

Something is telling me to be gentle when I say this, but you just compared the top AKG with the bottom Grado (apart from the iGrado, which is really not comparable anyway). Should a $79 SR-60 ever have stood a chance against a $500 K-701? I'm not trying to apologize for the Grado. I'm just wondering how there was ever any question of how this one was going to turn out. I know the 701 has ...
