It won't work since I have a usb dac. Ground loop isolators are RCA only. Would this work? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...pf_rd_i=507846 Won't this unit degrade sound quality though?

I use 3 soundcards at the same time. It is no problem with windows 7. you can even use them simultanously with different programs running. you could, lets say use one for skype, one for a movie and the third for music, all active and running at the same time. in win7 you can even switch between soundcards while the program is running. lets say you are watching a movie and you change the windows sound settings from one dac to another it will...

Save your $40, cause you will most probably not benefit much from putting them into an external amplifier.

Use the front line out rather than the headphone line out, so that you avoid the double amping. Double amping = bad. But yeah, the STX amp from what I hear is pretty awful. Some soundcards (AuzenTech Forte/HTHD) have decent built in headphone amps, but will still benefit from a good external amplifier. In the price range you have for an amp, any sound card will benefit from an external amp.

SPDIF can only do 2 channels, unless it's carrying something like Dolby Digital or DTS (which are lossy formats that compress multiple channels into the space for 2).

the drivers on the Onkyo are miles better, no contest! automatic sample rate, exclusive mode KS, no resident apps, rock stable...the complete opposite of the Asus actually it's also got the VLSC in-house tech to improve oversampling...OTOH op-amps are not swappable, there's no HP out I think? and prolly the RMAA measurements don't look as good, but luckily you don't listen to raw sinewaves...

The ST is not available in every country, and hardly in the US(it's said to start showing up, though). The Claro Halo is indeed comparable, I did a quick shootout in its dedicated thread if you wanna have a look...but stick right there, an Asus rep will be right back w/ you shortly.

The clicking and static/hum/buzz is really driving me nuts. I know there are ground loop isolators, but they're all for rca connections. I have a usb dac, so if there no way to install a ground loop isolator? Will a new pci usb card solve the problem? It's an intermittent event. It happens whenever it feels like it. It eventually goes away sometimes if I leave the computer on long enough. ...

Yes USB 24bit 192khz it is exceptional The Musiland monitor 02us is the best bargain I have ever purchased in Audio. Even if you only ever used it to convert usb to coaxial or optical or bnc it is amazing. It sounds significantly better from a usb source than my cambridge dacmagic which cost 4 times the amount. The new driver is a significant upgrade.

The headphone amplifier chip used in the ST/STX, the TPA6120A2, is one of the better single device solutions out there, and is probably superior to many inexpensive headphone amps based upon standard op amps. I don't doubt that there are better amps out there, but not without significant cost.

I really believe getting a pair of bookshelf speakers like the M-Audio AV40 and Behringer MS40 would be the best choice but overall I feel they really need a subwoofer to go with them. I've heard others say you may need ...

Well-designed active systems have advantages that cannot be duplicated in any system facing the problems of passive crossovers and the limitations of amplification that is not matched, and directly coupled to, individual drivers. To even approach the clarity and control you have now would require a passive system at many times the cost of what you currently have invested, and it still wouldn't ...

Hi all! I got my essence today and am enjoying it thoroughly. Would have enjoyed it even more if not for a weird (and very short) reverb of the highs. I think someone else noticed it on this thread. I am using my essence with AD700s and their sparkly highs make it a bit tedious to listen to music for a long time. Couple this with the weird reverb and the music starts to sound very ...

Nice summary. Many of these posts got lost into oblivion in the massive sneak peek thread. I'd like to add that I've finally settled on 3xLME49720's with my setup. The 49720/JRC2114 setup was good but the dry sound/unforgiving treble and lower soundstage depth became fatiguing after a while.

It might, if the amount of noise going over the USB is different between different computers, or if one computer has a better internal clock (Amarra, from what I can see, uses the input clock in a Mac to send a better timed digital signal to a DAC for example). It would be interesting I think if someone with the right gear could do some measurements to find out. An interesting experiment one ...
