Before you cut anything, consult your friend and see what his take is on doing this. I've never heard of anyone modifying other cables to work on the D7000. I would suggest to sell the current HD-650 cables and get a cable specifically for the D7000.

The cables are sort of hard to replace but I can give it a shot, but then why do things change when I move other cables around independent of the speaker cables?

Cables are always an interesting topic but my experience hasn't been radically different than yours. I have a Moon Audio Blue Dragon v.3 and a Zu Mobius v.2 for my multiple pairs of HD650's. I love the headphones for much of the solo strings and string chamber music I listen to and the subtle, but audible, difference these cables bring is worth it to me. People that talk about " night-and-day" ...

I have owned a few lesser ESS versions. Their weakness was always their bass (flabby, inaccurate) but maybe these new versions are improved.

It is not about the price tag of the cable, but rather what it is made of...
But different cables certainly may change a headphones sound signature, and that goes for IEMs as well.

My grandma could build a smaller LOD with 2 hands tied behind her back.
In all seriousness, that's pretty small, although some headfiers have dedicated their lives to building the lowest profile ones possible, and I've seen some pretty dinky ones. Certainly the smallest production one.

This could be an alternative to the Panther. A tube hybrid amplifier from Xiangsheng. 80 W/ch and USB output. For about $150 USD (in China), this could be a category killer.
Go check out Xiangsheng's Taobao store. Xiangsheng's online store
Xiangsheng H-80BIII Tube Hybrid Amplifier with USB.

What computer case is that from Silverstone? Looks a lot like the Lian Li box.
Looks like a cool system to have. I'm bout to get my first Technics turntable. Dj wise I know Technics is just about the best with everything they put out, except cd/media players.

Let me get this straight. You have a 4 wire cable. You have one of the pairs from a speaker terminal pair going to an 8 ohm load. The other pair, which is next to the speaker-8 ohm load pair in the cable, is running from a 150 ohm resistor, to a headphone jack (running left/right channels merged). I don't see exactly how you would hear anything, it's not like a significant current could be ...

AV123 X-Statiks would be my choice at that price range.

In this price range, your best option is to buy a used integrated amplifier. They sound better than receivers. Arcam, Creek, NAD, and Rotel are famous for their integrated amps and which usually include a good sounding phono section. Look on Audiogon.com
