Richard, I don't know when the 6-speed gearbox was introduced but do you have one. Also buy chance, do you have an instrument light that tells you when you are in your final gear ratio? (On my 6-speed Dyna I have a light that tells me when I am in 6th gear).

Surprisingly enough, if there is enough of the brushes and spring assy left, approximate the measurements and try to locate the carbon blocks...funny, some old school hardware and electrical motor rewinding retailers still carry assortments, usually for appliances and small HP motors.

I believe your speed sensor is going bad, it sounds like the common symptom. There are a couple of tips on the forum for testing the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) that should help you.

I have never seen this problem but,
Would you happen to have a SERT. With it you would be able to monitor the raw VSS input to the ECM (or at least how the ECM sees it) while you ride the bike.

Chances are your VSS is causing the problem with the 36K on the bike. The ECM cannot accurately read what the bike is doing. You can try cleaning it or just replace it especially if it has a lot of fuzz on it. Probably using Syn 3 In the trans?

Endangered Starter Brushes
I was reading my parts catalog for my '09 FXDL and was shocked to discover I can not buy replacement brushes for my starter. I know I can go to a local starter/alternator shop and find some that will work, but I was just surprised to see in order to buy brushes, you have to purchase an entire ...

Disconnect the single green wire plug on the starter solenoid and see if it continues cranking when this happens. This will separate the starting circuit on the bike from the solenoid and tell you whether the problem is in the wiring on the bike or the starter solenoid.

If you need to check and make sure your charging system is working, start your bike, put a meter across the battery terminals, throttle the bike up to about 2000 rpm and you should be charging probably over 13 volts.
