he shouldn't have to enter anything manually unless he is on DSL and it requires a username and password If its cable just plug and play, then go to the router interface to set up the security settings

Have you verified its not the onboard ethernet thats bad? Also are you able to replace the exterior the cable between the Router and the biscuit and the biscuit and the PC to see if those cables may be bad? I would also try a different NIC in the PC if you have one laying around.

I think Win7 does this automatically. It also allows you to properly bridge two connections.
