IF you want more than 3 displays, wait for the 6 display Eyefinity 6 card. You can use a cheap card to run a 4th display in the meantime, but you'll have to upgrade your card again to get 6 DP output.

It's been pretty fun the last few weeks watching the new tech roll in. I've been thinking a lot about what Brent said...that the hardware is far surpassed the software. Seems to me that right now is the worse time to buy high end, since most of the good games are currently console ports, and aren't demanding at all. The good thing is that cards like the GTX260 and 4870 are extremely affordable and provide an outstanding gaming...

$100-$120 upgrade
Published (2009-11-24 20:46:00)
Get the best card you can afford in that price bracket, if you go 2nd hand you can probably get a 4870 - then you should be able to run a higher res with little performance drop (as you will be cpu limited) but it will also be much faster than a 7xxx card even with your cpu. It doesn't sound like you want to drop alot of cash replacing cpu + m/b + ram atm, also can you push your x2 4400 any higher - weren't they 2.4ghz stock or was...

What monitor do you have?
How do you have it hooked up? (hdmi? dvi?)
When does it happen? What are you doing when it happens?
Only certain colors (or black?)

If they don't have any 8800 Ultras, I'm guessing they might send you a GTS 250 1GB or a GTX 260. I would just wait and see what they send back, but if you really want something new:
4870 for $155:

yea for that massive 2880x900 resolution..... No thank you, even though it is 43" I'd rather have a single 30" @ 2560x1600 :P

id go with a second 280 if you can get one for a good price. I wouldn't worry about stuttering... I've never noticed any on my 295 (which is more or less an sli setup), although I don't have much experience with it beyond that.... YMMV
Or try to pickup a 5970

Because only a few games actually need more memory, and then usually only at 25*16 resolution with AA enabled. That's a very small market. There's also a fair chance that if you are running out of video memory at that resolution, the rest of the card is starting to be heavily taxed as well.
There are, however, some applications that can take advantage of alot more video memory, and that's ...

heat bill would increase but your power bill would drop LOL. You will probably get less performance in games but freeing up a slot might be nice.

I don't care about cuda or physx...I just want the highest minimum fps possible, and looks like I'll just be dreaming of 5870 tri-fire until prices come down in a year or fergie, whichever comes first.

If you can afford it, I'd say it's worth it. I definitely got a big improvement out of adding a 2nd 285 to my setup. You'll be faster than a 5970...and you don't need to worry at all about settings in games, just max everything out, and you can add tons of AA.

Once they get CF working on 5870/5850s in Eyefinity, bezel management and smaller bezel monitors, I expect even those not sure about it would consider upgrading.
