A Windows 7 poll

I learned how to do it recently so was using them but haven't set up any on my latest build yet but will because they are a handy feature. Libraries allows me to store docs etc. where I want and away from the OS partition and yet still access them quickly from the MyDocuments folder in the start menu.

A Windows 7 poll

Just wondering if people are liking/using Libraries yet... A more informative thread thread would be, "Windows 7 Libraries poll", but I didn't want to call it that, because it would attract more people who actually use Libraries. (or just really hate it)

This is a good point and one I'd never really thought of before. GNOME uses these:

http://gotroot.ca/~ktims/dump/gnome-...nt- save-as. png
WTF? I can't put images in my post? Lame.

Shouldn't be a problem, just don't run one copy of Win 7 on more than one computer at a time. You may need to call MS to get Win 7 to reactivate, when they ask how many computers it's running on, just say "one" and they'll get it activated for you. [as tricky said, don't enter a key or activate if you have it on the backup computer for less than 120 days.]

It can be achieved in a workgroup. He would want to create two user accounts, one for each roommate, on the server, and assign permissions to those folders accordingly. In my experience of setting up servers at home, if he uses the same workgroup name for all computers, and the same username/password combination....they won't get prompted for login credentials when connecting to the shared ...

I had tons of freezes and crashes when I upgraded from vista 64 bit to windows 7 64 bit. I had to do a clean install after to fix it. Really if I knew I was going to be going into this I wouldn't have upgraded to 7. I agree, though I have had many more problems with 7 than vista ever had, so I call bullshit on 7 magically being better than vista.

You are on the right track.
To dual-boot, simply install Win7 form the Vista desktop, and select you other drive for the Win7 install.
If you need more info than that, let me know..I'm alerady running dualboot, and about to format and do it again, so might be able to give a step-by-step if it's really needed...

Sure, easiest way I can think of now is if you're using a SOCKS proxy on the phone. Set it up in browser, and it will run through phone.

Do the latest service pack first for sure. Make sure you get the full standalone install version. If you have installed SP2 on your machine you can check your update history to see what updates have been done since it was installed. At least it's some place to start. Downloading them one at a time is going to be a pain. Installing them one at a time will also try your patients. Be prepared for a...

The classic, "Windows 2000" theme still exists, the taskbar can mimic the look and feel of the classic taskbar (up to a point), but the classic start menu is dead and gone. FYI there was a recent discussion about the latter here .
Dunno if you ever used the Vista or 7 start menu, but typing a keyword for a program and hitting enter >>> Clicking start and hunting for that program you wish to ...

Well with an SSD, you can get a barebones Windows 7 install to boot in about 5 to 10 seconds, big woop. As the most of the threads on this have been saying this is pretty much just an junk appliance OS. Wouldn't touch this shit with a 100 meter pole.

So far I am not having any issues with my VISTA. However now a days the applications are frequently getting freezzed, There are some process that are unnecessarily eating the CPU.
Knowing that 7 is more smooth, requires less resources and still outperforms VISTA in each and every sense, made me think that i should upgrade to Windows 7 now or should I wait for its SP1 to be released?

Thing is that the Vista and 7 searches are technically MUCH different, at least not without WDS installed on XP or 2000.
Search in 7 is simply awesome, much faster a less quirky than Vista's and it's become a MUCH HAVE feature for me. Since it searches OneNote and I store just about everything in my OneNote notebooks these days.

Either install off-line, and download SP3 to another computer, install SP3 then go on-online, or if you don't want to do that, then install a firewall, and immediately hit-up windows update and grab all updates. Yes it's true that XP RTM will be infected in minutes in its default configuration.

you mean remote in as RDC? or VPN?
RDC would be dependant on the bandwidth you have, as well as are the people RDC' into their own workstations, or into a VM or something created on the server?
R2 is a new version based on windows 7 so to speak, server 2008 is based on vista more so, well not based on it, but same core.

I'll start with a couple that jump to mind (the ones listed above), since they bothered me on a regular basis:
- Folders randomly forget their view settings (such as 'Thumbnail', 'List', etc) after a while
- Dragging folders around in the Start Menu (under All Programs) doesn't work like you'd expect

if I build a computer for $500, load up OPK, then I'll sell it to myself for $500. DONE
i do think that its a bad move on MS' part, but then again, how many people actually abide by the EULA? We have people using Technet in production environments, people installing OEM on multiple computers, etc etc People will continue to do as they please, and ignore the EULA.
Now it does limit ...

Assuming your hard drives connect in the same manner (SATA/AHCI vs IDE), you should be fine.

You want a retail copy. The OEM license is only valid on the first hardware it's installed on.
