I'm a game/price enthusiast for sure, no interest in servers, and business applications for cpus. I'm all about pushing technology forward, but I think garbagetown is the wrong direction. Just like the 1st quad cores when they came out, garbagetown will be for braggarts only. Once I found out who buys the luxury enthusiast components, I decided I could never support that path. Just rich egomaniac shopaholics, with a napoleon...

Anyone? Thinking of slapping in the 860 and selling my 750.. not sure if its worth it? I like when an OS flows smoothly and Kyle mentioned the i7 rigs felt smoother then the i5 rigs.

You never tried to OC your E8400? Shame on you.
Alright, well I'm no expert on OCing, I just started last year with my Q6600, but I have found it to be fairly easy. What I would suggest is first take stock load temperatures and checking stability, of course I believe it should be stable at stock, what I would do for this is simply make sure it has headroom for higher temperatures.
If ...

There is the rumored i7 930 which will increase the clock speed to 2.8 GHz (meaning you'd have more overclocking potential with the higher multiplier), but per Intel's roadmaps (at least as of now) there will be no 32nm quad-core parts until Sandy Bridge. If rumors are correct, the 930 should be out in Q1 2010.
For motherboards, the X58 will probably be the exclusive northbridge until ...

Set multi (CPU Ratio) to 9, set voltage to VID and make sure the RAM is running 1:1 (lowest setting). Also, run memtest. Also, what cooler are you running and what kind of temps are you seeing?

There isn't a major difference between an overclocked i7 and an overclocked Q9550 when gaming with a single-card setup. If money is an issue for you, then a Q9550 would probably be the best way to go.

Damn, you really have a hard-on for Turbo boost, eh? lol.
Good write up though. It is an extremely easy way to get more performance since you don't really have to do anything to get it. I thought Turbo boost only kicked in with single-threaded apps though? So if you have something utilizing all threads, it'll stay at it's stock speed (no turbo). That's the only thing I don't care much ...

Glad you love your q6600.
Though your a bit late on the q6600 boat.
If you got a microcenter near you then consider upgrading to the q9550.

Do you even need to put your voltage that high? I am currently running a d0 920 @ 4.0 GHz with 1.3v core on the asus p6td deluxe. I've even heard of people getting d0's to run stable at 1.26V @ 4.0 GHz, I just haven't tried it.

Quad core is more than enough for gaming. The extra 4 phoney cores that HT would give likely wouldn't do much for gaming.
It's still only a handful of games that make efficient use of quad-core's capabilities, in most cases your going to be GPU limited.
The extra HT might be nice for some video encoding apps, and some say Windows feels more responsive in general *shrug*.
