Looking for a good cheap HDD
Published (2009-11-28 00:30:00)
Not to disappoint you, but yesterday both tigerdirect and amazon had this drive: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digita...cmu_pg__header for $69. That's right. Now it seems the price is gone. I posted the one for tigerdirect here, but by the time I filled up my cart with other items, the HD was gone! So i went to amazon and bought everything from there and I am glad I did. In retrospect, I should have bought like 20 and sold them on ebay....

NAS device

You'll need a fairly beefy CPU to do on the fly transcoding, and all the deciated NAS units I'm aware of have wimpy little MIPS or ARM cores in them that certainly aren't up to the task. I'd build a mini-ITX based Linux box with a decent CPU, run softraid on your hard drives for stroage and boot from flash. Run your choice of media server, plus samba/nfs and you're good to go. Probably *still* cost you less than a...

Hmmm.... don't teasme to save money on this! Are there any other glitches that may pass through even if we run UPS and cause faults that could be prevented if one has a BBU?

TRIM on intel RAID controller
Published (2009-12-02 23:14:00)
It's related to the drivers that are used for the controller. Currently the only drivers that support TRIM are the default MS ones. If you're using the Intel drivers (necessary for RAID last I knew), regardless of what mode you're actually using, TRIM won't work.

dude, the intels have serious issues when they are writing, and reading in the very same time, their performance goes to shit. this is a very under-reported issue with those ssd's, but very true nonetheless..they do not handle real world applications as well, because once they start writing, their perfomance is crap. anandtech has some good articles on ssd's. look up the one about real world ...

Looks like it just came out. Anyone know if (destroying most drives aside) there are any changes from 02HA?
Either way, I won't be flashing for at least a week, I learned that lesson.

Even though the SATA, USB, and SCSI subsystems are separate, they do still share a common link to the CPU and memory (i.e. the southbridge<->northbridge/CPU link). So if your SATA drive is taking a good portion of that link's bandwidth, the other devices wouldn't be able to transfer data through it as fast as they usually would.
To know for sure though that is what you're experiencing, ...

First off I want to say stay away from the deathstars....srsly they still suck.
I bought three at frys the other day 2 out of 3 were DOA.
No one said you had to use WD drives.
You could get some Seagate Barracuda LPs. I have 4 of them and I dont have any issues.
My suggestion is a Combination of the above.

An SSD RAID thread pops up every few days, why not look back. Off the top of my head, the SSD will be faster than your RAID0 and TRIM isn't supported in SSD RAID. So, do you really need to spend $600 for such an increase in speed?

I'm kinda in the same position, and was wondering about this too.
If I got a SSD, it would probably only be a very small one (due to cost) and only for Windows 7... games and programs would still have to go onto a bigger, slower drive. So would this affect general usage, or would it only affect boot times? The time it takes to boot up is virtually irrelevant for me, because I pretty ...
