The ability to read DVD discs is independent of Lightscribe which only does the labeling on the label surface For the latest version, it's available here http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadSection/index.a spx Perhaps it's the way you're burning the disc. (like a DVD to play in your DVD player vs like a
USB thumb drive)

Try these links. 1st uninstall current driver from device manager, then go into
regedit and delete upper/lower filters is they're there then reboot the pc and let it install back. Hope this works. 1) http://www.pchell.com/hardware/cd_drive_error_code _39.shtml 2) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

How old is the drive? Over time, the laser may not work as well. You may need to simply replace or add
a new drive.

Any Video Converter might be forcing the use of an ASPI layer? not entirely sure. But there are a lot of CD/DVD utilities that you can download and install that will interfere with each other (including certain versions of iTunes). There is no firmware available and don't expect HP to give you one, because there is no latest firmware available for this model. If it has any issue try to check by connecting to different computer and see if it works. If it doesn't then replace it.

I'm not familiar with that model number but you shouldn't need updated "firmware" for it to work. Windows XP, Vista, or 7 needs to
plug and play and recognize it as a writable drive. If so, you should be able to write to writable discs. Which discs you can write on depend on the version of Windows and what the drive is capable of. For example, Windows XP cannot burn to and writable ...
